Juve v Palermo: PWNED

Wow. Not much to say about this one, really, except for the fact that Juve absolutely played Palermo off the pitch. God damn, that was impressive.

Palermo may as well have been a bunch of pink cones for how effective they were, apart, maybe from Roberto Guana, who was a very (physically) dangerous, nearly out-of-control pink cone, and Franco Brienza, who was a pink cone who periodically moved around and did something marginally effectively.

On the other side of the ball, it was entirely effortless: David “Not Good Enough for France” Trezeguet had a tremendous first half and scored again, Pavel Nedved was brilliant the entire match, Vincenzo Iaquinta left Palermo captain Andrea Barzagli for dead not once but twice, and Alex Del Piero came on late to score a stunning free kick, yell at Raffaele Palladino, and secure a brace with a last-minute PK (thanks to Nedved). It was football good enough to thrash anyone, and thrilling to watch even if you’re not exactly a Juve fan — every error by Palermo was instantly punished, and the Bianconeri did absolutely whatever they wanted. Gorgeous, gorgeous football. (And if I’m happy after a Juve win, you know had to have been very pretty indeed.)

  ps: I vaguely remember predicting that Trezeguet would score 20+ goals, and I think you made fun of me with a snide comment about “5 goals in B – really?” and then proceeded to rant about lazy strikers.

  But we Juventini have a little song for Tr3zeguet: “quando gioca segna sempre trezeguet!”

  Palermo came out with exactly the wrong approach. They sat back, fearful, waiting for Juve to punch them in the mouth. Juve obliged. Palermo’s 5-man midfield was terrible strategy. They were often caught out too high, which left Barzagli and Zaccardo as lambs for the slaughter. That bunched midfield jumbled itself up too with short passes that Juve broke up and then went on the offensive. I’m not for Palermo, but I was expecting more from the Sicilians. Anyway, Trezguet’s whip-lash goal and Del Piero’s crusher of a free kick were nice to watch.

  I hear a rumor that Trezeguet actually spent some time not hanging out in front of the goal. Like, almost kind of on the wings. Any truth to this rumor? This more than anything could bring he and RayRay to another meeting of the minds on that whole France thing.

  Laurie, it’s true — he pulled out wide a ton, and running more than I’ve maybe ever seen him run before. I don’t know if someone spiked his Gatorade or what, but the man was on fire.

  (And I second all your FUCKs. But damn, they were good.)

  Steven, I was just checking for quotes — do you think he drank himself into a stupor during the match and hasn’t yet recovered? I can’t think of any other reason for his silence.
