Week 6: Inter Go Top, Milan Continue to Struggle
By: Martha | October 1st, 2007
Both Milan teams have struggled by their standards this season, but this weekend Inter finally put and end to the talk of a crisis with a 4-1 thrashing of 10-man Roma. Granted, the silence is sure to be only temporary, and the game would have been very different had a tiny Frenchman not forgotten what sport he was playing, but at this point Roberto Mancini will take whatever he can get. Milan, meanwhile, are still looking for their first win since Week 1 and seem to have confirmed that they’re in trouble with yet another bloodless performance in yet another draw, this time with Catania (who, with a bit of luck, could have taken the full three points).
Further north, Juve managed to eek out another win and are just a point behind Inter at the top of the table, a point clear of impressive Fiorentina, who responded to the absence of Adrian Mutu with two goals from debutant Pablo Daniel Osvaldo in a 3-0 whupping of dismal Livorno. Despite the loss to Inter, Roma are just three points off the top with 11 points from their six games, one above Palermo, Napoli and Udinese, all of whom are would see a place in Europe as a fantastic achievement.
At the other end of the table, Livorno are making it clear they’re going to be this year’s Ascoli — that team you’re not sure is ever going to win a game. They’ve got only two points and really just look awful, lacking the appealing youth and enthusiasm that Ascoli managed to muster even as they lost over, and over, and over again. Just ahead of them on three are Reggina, who manged a draw with Lazio yesterday, and Siena, who went down to Cagliari thanks to an early penalty. Poor Torino, meanwhile, are just above the drop zone with four points — those early draws made them look tough and gave supporters some hope, but two straight losses may be a more accurate reflection of their true quality. Sigh.
Full results, table after the jump.
Cagliari-Siena 1-0
Empoli-Palermo 3-1: Zamparini is losing his shit already. Nice. (More on that later.)
Livorno-Fiorentina 0-3
Milan-Catania 1-1
Napoli-Genoa 1-2
Reggina-Lazio 1-1: Forget the draw, Tommaso Rocchi’s ankle injury probably means he won’t be able to play against Real on Wednesday. Oh, this is bad. Very, very bad.
Roma-Inter 1-4
Sampdoria-Atalanta 3-0: A sweet little goal for Antonio Cassano who pulled a Bobo, yanking off his shirt and basking in the love of the masses. Honestly, it really was touching — a deliriously happy Cassano is not a sight we’ve seen much lately.
Torino-Juventus 0-1
Udinese-Parma 2-1: Substitute Fabio Quagliarella (AKA The Greatest Goal-Scorer Ever, at least according to the media this summer) finally opened his Udine account. It’s about damn time.
