Keeper Rumblings in Milan
By: Martha | January 16th, 2007
Sidelined with a knee injury since late November, Milan’s Nelson Dida could reclaim his spot in goal this weekend against Lazio. There is some doubt, however, whether Zeljko Kalac will keep his place as Dida’s backup: Playing behind an aging, sometimes ragged defense, the Aussie gave up five goals in seven games, a performance that apaprently failed to inspire confidence in Carlo Ancelotti.
According to an article in The Gazetta Dello Sport, Milan are pursuing Marco Storari, Messina’s caveman of a keeper, as cover (?) for Dida. Additionally, should the persistent rumors of a summer departure for the out-of-contract Brazilian prove true, one assumes Storari would at least be in the running for the first-team spot. From what I can tell (as you know, Google translations require a LOT of guessing), Milan are prepared to spend a ton of money on the player, and serious talks are underway, like, right now.
Well. This really seems to have come out of nowhere and, as far as I can tell from the tone of the automated translation (sigh), it’s a real possibility, not just a mostly made-up rumor. I’ve not seen Messina play much this year, but I do sort of like the idea of Storari in the Milan goal because he’s so … un-Milan. He’s loud and messy and wears pink and ugly hats when it’s sunny — I’d love to see if he could mesh with this team. (That said, someone who speaks Italian and has free time, please go skim the article, and leave any major corrections in the comments. For all I know it actually might be about a fishing trip Dida and Storari are planning.)
Edit: As Sam the Italian-reader mentioned in the comments, it’s now official: The caveman is a Milan player.

According to a short note in today’s Gazzetta, Storari could be signed in a matter of hours. (Italian hours are somewhat different than everyone else’s however.) Dida possible for this weekend’s match and presumably Kalac finishes out of the money. Gazzetta suggests that Kalac’s problems are more than purely statistical, but they don’t say what. He might want to call Boca.
Anyhow, if Gattuso can fit into Milan, any old Geico caveman should feel right at home. Ciao tutti!Posted from

I read Kalac is out for 2 months with ligament damage. Dida has been cleared to play but will sit out on Thursday for the Coppa Italia match and Valerio Fiori will play. Maybe Storari is Milan’s insurance. I read reports that Milan are not going to keep Dida on and Dida himself said he’d consider a move to England. I don’t know what they are trying to do, but I hope they get back to losing games….. Forza Inter!

According to that link you give it’s official! Storari is now a Milan keeper until 2010. Dida is in line to play against Lazio and Kalac is out for a month.
Still, it’s better than playing Fiori I guess… Don’t Milan have any decent young keepers at all then in their youth academy?
