Laugh it Up, Haters
By: Martha | September 14th, 2007
As you may have heard, Christian Chivu picked up a shoulder injury in Romania’s game last weekend, and sat out their midweek friendly as a result. Though the injury was originally thought to be fairly minor, La Gazzatta is reporting this morning that Chivu will be out for a full month, a revelation that is horrible news for Inter, who are already without both Marco Materazzi and probably Walter Samuel, and great news for everyone who likes it when bad things happen to Inter.
While the loss of another (theoretically) first team defender is bad enough for Serie A matches, it’s almost comically disastrous for the Champions League which, impossibly, starts up again next week. See, thanks to last year’s brawl with Valencia, Julio Cruz (two matches), Ivan Cordoba (two matches), Maicon (three matches) and Nicholas Burdisso (six matches) are all suspended and won’t be making an appearance until at least the third game of the group stage. And, while the absence of Cruz is inconsequential (in so many ways), the other three bad boys are all defenders, which means Roberto Mancini will be without fully half of the backs on his Champions League roster for Wednesday’s match at Fenerbahçe. Of those who remain, one has been playing in the midfield for the past two years (Javier Zanetti), one is someone you’ve never heard of (Nelson Rivas), one is 19 (Dennis Esposito), and only one — Rivas — is a central defender.
Yeah, yeah. It’s hilarious, I know. And, to make it even better, there’s apparently a good chance Rivas’ partner on Wednesday will be Patrick Vieira. Sweet. (This suggestion is supported by the fact that when I Google “Chivu injury,” my little Wikipedia widget brings up Vieira’s page. Creepy.)

Daniele, I need him to wear a silly mask for Inter, though, can you work on that?
(And he is, Marco. Just like Fetyani up there.)
