Lazio v Milan: An Oddo-Free Zone
By: Martha | January 21st, 2007
I know Valon Behrami has been publicly unhappy about having to play right back if Oddo ever actually leaves Lazio, but if Behrami The Back is always as good as he was today — when, apparently out of spite over his desire to leave, Oddo was not even on the bench — he ought to warm to the position quickly. Spending a lot of his time getting forward, Behrami nevertheless made one goal-saving tackle and was a tough, reliable defender when necessary. If he didn’t have that hideous, leopard hair, I’d say he was Lazio’s best player on the day.
Though the game was scoreless, both teams played pretty well. There weren’t a lot of shots on goal (Dida did make at least one impressive reaction save), but there was a fair amount of possession, and a lot good defending on both ends of the pitch. And Milan continue to get better — to their credit, Lazio denied Kaka the space he needs to wreck havoc, but even without him running rampant, Milan were much more confident than they were just a few weeks ago. For the first time in months, they actually seem to have a convincing shot at Europe next season.
Or they do if they can find a striker not named “Gilardino” who can scored. He was the victim of a crunching, clumsy Behrami tackle late in the game, and could easily be out for a while. It looked really, really bad (like broken, demolished ankle bad), but Gila gimped to the changing room under him own power, which is a good sign.
