Champions League: Lazio Getting Fired Up

By: Martha | December 11th, 2007

Hawt.Unlike Inter and Roma when they play tomorrow, Lazio have everything play for in Champions League, and then some. Going into Matchday 6, they stand last in Group C with five points, but the group is so tight that a two-goal win over Real Madrid (and a favorable result in the Olympiakos v Werder Bremen match) would send them through, based on head-to-head results. It goes without saying that this match could make Lazio’s season: They’ve been decimated by injuries, are struggling terribly in Serie A, and lost the Rome derby, but a win over Real Madrid — in Madrid — would make all of that go away.

In practical terms, it would probably help them to go out of Champions League, but practical goes out the window in a situation like this and, if Lazio can find the toughness and sharpness with which they played against Real at home (holding them to a 2-2 draw in a match one could argue they should have won), it cold be a fantastic match. That said, despite the inspiring performance against Los Blancos at home, Lazio have an uphill climb ahead of them. Apart from the obvious, Real haven’t lost at home all season, and have lost only one of their last 24 Champions League matches full stop. Plus, you know, they’re pretty damn good. And then, of course, there’s always the possibility that Lazio will come out as the lifeless lumps of flesh they were against Inter and get crushed, but let’s be optimistic, shall we?

Steven’s got a preview up at the Real blog and will be live-blogging, so if you’re at work and can’t watch the match, go by there for your biased updates.
