Lazio: Woo Hoo, a Real Game!
By: Martha | August 14th, 2007
During a time in which most footballers would probably rather lop off a toe than do one more goddamn, preseason fitness session, Lazio have the great pleasure of actually playing a competitive match today, when the third qualifying round for the Champions League kicks off this afternoon. The Rome club — whose only last Champions League appearance far as I can tell, came in the 1999-2000 2003-2004 season — will host Dynamo Bucharest, who topped the Romanian league last season and will likely have a significant fitness advantage having already played three league matches.
Not content to choose the typical “Yes, this match is important but we will take it in stride” approach with the media, Lazio captain Luciano Zauri has gone and told everyone that it’s the most important game, like, ever: “For Lazio, this season is tied to this game. It’s a fundamental match. I have no suggestions to give.” Now, that may well be true, but have some mercy, Zauri. It’s not like these people — most of whom have never played in a Champions League match before — aren’t already nervous enough. Does it really help matters to tell them that if they screw up these 90 minutes, the whole season is in the crapper?
(Yes, it’s a painfully slow news day.)

Actually, wait — could that have been the UEFA Cup? Wikipedia shows them as semi-finalists in 02-03 …

Funny you put a pic up of Mutarelli because he scored about 10 minutes ago.
Oh and Lazio did participate in 03/04 and were placed last in the group stage. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Champions_League_2003-04
Lost out to Sparta Praha and Besiktas. Grahahahah.Posted from

Mutarelli is my favorite Lazio player, though I must admit it’s mostly because I’m fascinated by how Russian he looks. Thanks for digging up that link, Rickard, I appreciate it. Will go edit now.

You TOTALLY jinxed Mutarelli, he got red-carded along with one teammate and Lazio only managed 1-1 at home.

Oh, hell.
And shut up, Chris. Just because your team can’t hold a two-goal lead against Juve is no reason to take it out on Lazio.

Good comeback. Throwing back into my face JV friendly results. Bravo.

Yes, I didn’t have time for research and just grabbed at the nearest truth.

I don’t support Lazio but I’m bummed out by this result. Rocchi misses a penalty and two players get red carded. Two? God bless it. Now they need to go to Romania without two MF’s in a hostile crowd. Crap. I really want to see 4 Italian teams in the CL group stages. Lazio could use the money desperately. The only way to hope to level the playing field in Serie A is if someone besides Inter, Milan and Juventus get into the CL. Yes, I know Juve wasn’t there last year and Roma had a good showing before getting bombed out… but those results are needed in consecutive years in order to share the wealth.
