Lippi makes Confederations Cup/Friendly call-ups and he officially hates Cassano
By: Francesco | May 28th, 2009
Today the list of 35 players was announced that will play in a friendly on June 6th in Pisa vs. Northern Ireland and the upcoming FIFA Confederations Cup. 22 players were called up for the Northern Ireland game, while 13 will skip that match and go straight to South Africa. Lippi said in recent weeks that the roster for the Northern Ireland match would be mainly experimental and would give national team experience to the players that merited a call-up based on their play throughout the Serie A season. So who did Lippi call “based on merit”? Let’s see after the jump.
First, here is the list of 13 players already going to the Confederations Cup:
Goalkeepers: Buffon (Juventus), Amelia (Palermo);
Defenders: Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Chiellini (Juventus), Zambrotta (Milan);
Midfielders: Camoranesi (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Pepe (Udinese), Pirlo (Milan);
Strikers: Gilardino (Fiorentina), Iaquinta (Juventus), Quagliarella (Udinese), Toni (Bayern Monaco).
No real surprises, as this is basically Lippi’s core group. Funny how Simone Pepe has now become one of the national team’s untouchables. (Yes, it’s ok if you feel sick to your stomach like I did after I read that phrase.)
Here is the roster for the Northern Ireland friendly. 10 of these players will be added to the Confederations Cup roster:
Goalkeepers: De Sanctis (Galatasaray), Marchetti (Cagliari);
Defenders: Cassani (Palermo), Dossena (Liverpool), Gamberini (Fiorentina), Grosso (Olympique Lione), Esposito (Lecce), Legrottaglie (Juventus), Santon (Inter);
Midfielders: Biagianti (Catania), Brighi (Roma), D’Agostino (Udinese), Galloppa (Siena), Gattuso (Milan), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Palombo (Sampdoria);
Strikers: Foggia (Lazio), Mascara (Catania), Pazzini (Sampdoria), Pellissier (Chievo), Rossi Giuseppe (Villarreal).
1) First things first, if I have to make predictions on who will go to the Confederations Cup from this group I would have to say De Sanctis will go as the third keeper; Dossena, Gamberini, Grosso, and Legrottaglie will be added to the defense; Pazzini and Giuseppe Rossi will be added to the strikers; and the tricky predictions are in midfield. Currently Lippi has 4 midfielders on the Confederations Cup roster, which leaves room for 3 players. I’m pretty sure Biagianti and Galloppa won’t be in South Africa this June, so that leaves Brighi, D’Agostino, Gattuso, Montolivo, and Palombo fighting for three spots.
2) So this is supposedly a list of the 35 best players in Italy this season. (long pause) NOT!!!!! It is obvious from these call-ups that Lippi has something against certain players, or just doesn’t want to include them in his team. And yes, you all know where this is going:
Cassano was one of the top players of Serie A this season. He scored 12 goals and countless assists (last time I checked he was at 12 or 13). He only received 2 yellow cards all season. And if Lippi was making call-ups “based on merit” as he said, surely Cassano did more than enough to “merit” a call-up. Does anyone else realize that Sergio Pellissier is on the national team and Cassano isn’t? That’s right, Sergio Pellissier. I mean ok, Pellissier is a good player, he played really well for Chievo this season, but why does he get a call-up over Cassano? Because he scored a hat-trick against Lippi’s beloved Juventus? Can Lippi just come out and say that Cassano doesn’t fit into his plans instead of saying the same line (”Every player aged 18 to 40 has a chance to play for the national team“) everytime he is asked about him? Well, I could go on and on about the Cassano situation but I’ll stop my rant now.
3) Giuseppe Mascara aka “The King of Scoring Goals from 40 yards out” has received his first-ever national team call-up. Mascara is a very good player with good technical ability but not national team material in my mind. In fact, if Lippi had to call up a fantasista from Sicily, he should of called Palermo’s Fabrizio Miccoli. Anyone watching Serie A this season knows that Miccoli had an awesome season and deserved a national team call-up. He’s also much more talented then Mascara. But you know, this is Lippi, and probably when Miccoli played for Juventus the Italian Romario probably said something Mr. Lippi didn’t like and now he holds a grudge.
4) Marco Biagianti and Daniele Galloppa are not national team material and have no future with the national team. Good players for mid-table clubs, but that’s it. But then again, I said the same thing about Simone Pepe. And we all know how that’s going.
5) Mattia Cassani is a very good player and Lippi actually made a good choice calling him up, especially since besides Zambrotta and Grosso the only other fullback we really have is Andrea Dossena, who didn’t play much for Liverpool this season. Cassani had an excellent year in Sicily. However I also feel Giandomenico Mesto of Genoa deserved a call-up as well, as he played just as good if not a little better then Cassani this season.
6) Davide Santon. Awesome for the first few months, but understandably suffered a drop in form in the later parts of the season. We can’t blame him, he is only 18 years of age. It’s good for him to get a feel for international play, especially since after the World Cup he’ll probably be one of our starting fullbacks.
So the Nazionale will begin training on June 2nd in Florence for next Saturday’s friendly and on June 4th Lippi will announce the 10 other players that will join the first 13 for the Confederations Cup.

Where’s Balotelli in all of this??

Balotelli, though possibly the player that can bring some kind of spark back to the azzurri, has the maturity of a 10 year old. Lippi dosen’t seem too keen on players with no class.

No U-21 players are called up because Lippi doesn’t want to take them away from Casiraghi and hurt their chances of winning the U-21 European Championship. However I would’ve left Casiraghi Santon and taken Motta.

Lippi is turning into Italy’s version of Raymond Domenech.

What about Perotta? I know he’s been hurt of late, but Simone is a quality player who likely will be involved in World Cup next year. He wouldn’t help with pace (though U-21s will eventually help with that), but has the ability to make everyone around him better.

Yeah Dhaw, he should really call up some new players. (rolls eyes)
I couldn’t disagree with you more on Galloppa, Francesco. He’s been quite good all season and given Siena’s impotence in front of goal, you can’t fault him for a low level of assists. If he moves to a team with quality, he’ll prove his worth.
No one has mentioned no ADP…Lippi, better hire a security guard for your boat.

Oh didn’t notice no Perrotta…surprising, Lippi really likes him.
Di Vaio has no future in the Nazionale….he’s scored a good amount of goals but woohoo, so had Bianchi and Amoruso a few years ago.
Cassano should be called up, but let’s not act like he’s the savior of the team. He is no Baggio, not even close. I was distinctly unimpressed by him (as all Azzurri forwards) last summer.

@dhaw
that is so true, and so awful to contemplate… domenech is the worst national team coach of all time, and lippi is following his model to a tee

My feeling on Galloppa is that he’s a good player with good skills but many times he falls asleep during games and doesn’t get involved for long periods at a time. When he’s on he’s good though.

Actually I was thinking that he’s turning us into England – mostly fetch and carry, not a whole lot of flair.

MARCO MOTTA!!!!!!
MARCO MOTTA!!!!!!christ at least he chose Santon

Balzaretti… Alessio please, please do me the favor and not mention ADP every again. He is and never was a national team player.

what about santacroce? Or is it just because Napoli is my team?

He is and never was a national team player.
Wow, Giro, did you mean that to be so profound?

Cassano is not Baggio but he’s close. Put some off the ball runners around him (not Luca, not Gilamonster) and he will tear teams to shreds. I’ve watched a lot of Villarreal this year and Rossi would have 20 league goals if he polished his finishing boots. Very intelligent with his movement and passing, very hard worker too. Him + Cassano would be poetry in motion.

Rossi is a decent player but has not matured this season as I was hoping for him too. He’s still pretty raw. Cassano is ready, but I’m sorry Ricci he is not fit to polish Baggio’s boots. Roberto carried us to the final. Cassano was important in ‘04, utterly absent in ‘08.
ADP, Giro? Tied for 4th all-time on the Azzurri scoring charts….you don’t get that by scoring bullshit goals.

Marco Motta needs azzuri experience
and Perrotta is enough good now to play in South AfricaPosted from

ADP doesnt step up in big games. And now that he is 63 im sure it would be worse.

Euro 04′ Cassano was 22 years old and he did well. Everyone was looking at Totti and to a lesser extent ADP to do well. 08′ under Donadumbass, he was stuck out on the left wing and didn’t start every game, had no support around him, etc. He was still our only threat in that tournament. When you suggest Lippi should call ADP but not Cassano is why people don’t take you seriously. You put your club bias before everything when it comes to NT.

Agreed. Cassano is nowhere near Baggio. However, he IS the closest thing since Baggio. He is that type of player that brings electric stuff to the pitch. You certainly cannot judge his minimal contribution in ‘08 because, as was stated, he wasn’t really given a shot. In ‘04, however, Cassano was Italy’s best player in that tournament.
The only way Alex deserves a spot on this roster is if he plays the role of a super sub…but then again, i think everybody already knew that in the first place.
Johonna – LOL!!!! I was thinking the same thing!

I made a comment that ADP wasn’t going, Ricci, then defending his record with the Azzurri. You’ll also note I’ve always supported a call-up for Cassano, I just think too many people think he’s going to revolutionize the team. He’s not.

Definitely won’t revolutionize the team with the teams Lippi keeps picking. At least we can agree on that much. The starting XI definitely needs an overhaul to a certain degree.

If lippi doesn’t change this up some more, we’re gonna end up not doing so great in the world cup, and he’s gonna get sacked just like Donadoni.
Cassano needs in, Del piero could play for one more one, Giovinco needs to be called up already, we need some more talent!!!

With Lippi’s pick’s I field the below:
Buffon
Grosso-Canna-GC-Zambro
Camoranesi-De Rossi-Pirlo-Brighi/D’Agostino/Gattuso?
Rossi-Quags

My hope is that Il Traditore Rossi gets his head knock off by Onyewu.
