Lippi picks final 23 for Confederations Cup roster

By: Francesco | June 4th, 2009

Today was the FIFA deadline to submit the final 23 man roster going to the Confederations Cup, and Marcello Lippi has picked his 23 man squad. He had already chosen 13 names, but he added on 10 more. There are no real surprises (besides the inclusion of Davide Santon), and the squad is mostly what we’ve seen for recent qualifiers and friendlies. Santon is the only uncapped player on the roster, no other new faces were called into the final squad. Final squad after the jump.

GOALKEEPERS: Amelia (Palermo), Buffon (Juventus), De Sanctis (Galatasaray).

DEFENDERS: Cannavaro (Juventus), Chiellini (Juventus), Dossena (Liverpool), Gamberini (Fiorentina), Grosso (Lione), Legrottaglie (Juventus), Santon (Inter), Zambrotta (Milan).

MIDFIELDERS: Camoranesi (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Gattuso (Milan), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Palombo (Sampdoria), Pirlo (Milan).

STRIKERS: Gilardino (Fiorentina), Iaquinta (Juventus), Pepe (Udinese), Quagliarella (Napoli), Rossi (Villarreal), Toni (Bayern Monaco).

So, like I said, no real surprises. This is what we’ve seen in recent friendlies and qualifiers for the most part. Giampaolo Pazzini was left home, but I could see the reasoning as he wouldn’t see the field much with Toni, Gilardino, Iaquinta, and Quagliarella all ahead of him in the pecking order.

The defense has no real surprises (besides Santon), and it will be interesting if Inter’s prodigy gets some playing time (although Dossena is probably the first choice sub to Zambrotta and Grosso).

The midfield is what puzzles me a little bit. Matteo Brighi and Gaetano D’Agostino had by far much better seasons than Riccardo Montolivo, who still has not shown anything on the international level or has shown his full potential in Serie A. Angelo Palombo’s aggressive play and ball winning ability make him a good sub for Gattuso (and he has a ferocious shot from long distance), but I really think Brighi or D’Agostino should’ve gotten the nod over Montolivo. Especially D’Agostino, who I consider to be the best replacement for Pirlo we have. But remember, this is Lippi, he calls the shots, and whenever he is questioned we are just reassured that “anybody aged 18-40 can play for the national team.”

I can understand leaving out Brighi who apparently lost his form in the last 10-12 games for Roma but to not pick D’Agostino is baffling.

Well the Italy version of Raymond has done it again.
He is surely smoking some cheap shit.

Geez, enough of Toni already. he is declining. Gattuso hasn’t played for most of the year, Pirlo is off form.

Montolivo and Palombo are not Azzurri material!

It’s a freakin crime that D’Ago is not on this list! I rather have Brighi as well.

Lippi needs to put down the crack pipe. He is having 2006 flashbacks.

I hope in the fall we see some of the Under 21’s on the team, or we are going to be embarrased IF we get to South Africa.

    Shades of 1986

Well that is Lippi and these are his choices, he is hard headed and he will not change anything, he is going to the Fifa Confederations Cup and will go (if we qualify) to World Cup 2010 with most of the players that won the cup in 2006. The roster says it all, for crying out loud why did he call Gattuso, he was injured for most of the season and he is off form. Montolivo is not impressive at all. Palombo skills poor. Gilardino (I can hardly remember when was the last time he scored for Italy). Pepe worthless. Iaquinta & Toni ???, I respected Lippi when he led Italy to win World Cup 2006, but I certainly fear his ego and decisions lately. FIGC made a big mistake appointing Lippi again.

fucking disgrace, Brighi might have been Italian midfielder of the year but Gattuso who hasn’t played in 7 months gets the nod. D’Agostino is picking out ppl like a marine sniper but snubbed. Montolivo has been utter shite for the better part of 18 months. Fuck this hack, our players won that WC in 2006, not this moron.

This sqaud is a joke and is probably going to get embarassed. It will probably be good if they do. It might turn on a few light bulbs in the old testa duro. Things need to change.

The U-21’s have a better squad than the senior team.

Some of the names on the squad list make me want to puke.

you guys are freaking out way too easily over this. this isn’t too horrible of a lineup if you look at the first 11:
buffon (anyone gonna argue with that?)
    cbs: chiellini and gamberini (beasts)
rb: i’d like to see santon get the starts..if he soils himself bring in one of the others
lb: fab grosso plays better for the national team than anyone else. that’ll be fine
dm: gattuso or palombo can start alongside angry kid de rossi so you have alot of midfield bite.
mid: put montolivo in. i agree he’s not d’agostino…but with one of those crazy ass dm’s around to scream him into playing well i think you’ll be surprised at how good he is. camo is the other mid i think to get down the flank.
st: iaquinta and rossi are my picks.

there’s a good mix of youth and experience. i think some of the youth is way more dependable than anyone thinks especially tempered with some of the hardknocks on the team dragging them with them. pirlo has played like crap, montolivo needs to get his chance. i think rossi, santon, and montolivo all need to get a bunch of minutes so they can reach their potential. i like your chances with

    buffon
    santon-gamberini-chiellini-grosso
    camo-de rossi-palombo-montolivo
    rossi-iaquinta

i don’t think theres anything wrong with that lineup.

couple thing wrong 1. Montolivo sucks Pirl 10x more class
    2. Gattuso even not on form better than palombo and so is brighi

stasio: montolivo doesn’t suck. he’s about on form as pirlo as right now anyway. NEW BLOOD DUDE!

gattuso instead of palombo..that’s fine with me. then he can chase montolivo around yelling at him and turn him into the badass he can be. brighi isn’t called up i thought?

lippi’s smart. this squad of 23 has an average age of 28. kaka, for example, by comparison is 27. he has a mix of 12 defending world cup champions (50% of the team) mixed in with some hungry youth and hungrier veterans looking for one last shot. and he has an abundance of u21’s lurking over everyone’s shoulders. he has entered the next phase of his overall strategy for 2010. the morphing continues.

save palombo you can argue the whole midfield call up to be a wash, D’Ago and Brighi were locks in my mind before this call up…shame really…he never ceases to surprise me…

Don’t know why so many people are questioning Palombo’s choice. Have you guys seen the way he’s played for Samp this season? He’s easily been one of the top midfield enforcers this season in Serie A. And he’s not just a brute like Gattuso, on a number of occasions he’s created goals as well.

I agree that Montolivo and Gattuso were bad choices though. Gattuso, especially, cannot possibly be fit. I guess Lippi just wanted him in the squad for his spirit and to slap him in the face like he did in the World Cup. :D

after watching the costa rica game italy should be able to beat the states on the first game and build some confidence. cassano in for pepe, d’agostino or maybe perrotta/brighi in and its not too bad. we have a wc winning manager and great players; this is just practice for the wc, remember. i think we’ll get third and learn what does and doesnt work for 2010, players will get their chance to prove themselves, and if lippi cant realize that and change than his time is up.

Montolivo IS very good, it would have been a sin to leave him out. Lippi knows that he is the future of the Italian midfield, and needs to play in order to become greater and greater. I am happy that he is in.
