Livorno (Very Nearly) Crash Out of UEFA Cup; Parma Continue to Roll

By: Martha | November 30th, 2006

Parma rule.I’ve always wanted to say “crash out” — thanks, Livorno! And they lost points in the most painful way possible, too: Our of desperation, they field a full-strength side and led most of the game only to see Maccabi Haifa tie it in injury time, all but ending Livorno’s already shaky dreams of moving on. They now go to Auxerre needing a win to advance, while the hosts will need only a point to go through.

Parma, meanwhile, still have not lost in Europe, an achievement which, when you notice that Newcastle also have a perfect record, becomes slightly less impressive by association. Dramatically snatching victory from the jaws of a tie, they grabbed a full three points from Lens on an injury time goal by second-half sub Daniele Paponi. I’d love to see the highlights of this one — the home supporters must have gone just completely silent when that ball went in. The win puts Parma through — they’re top of their group with nine points, while no one else has more than four. Now if only they can just transfer some of that form to Serie A, they’ll be in business.
