Putting On Your Sunday Finest
By: chris | February 24th, 2008
Last giornata 8 teams walked away from their fixture having failed to score a goal. This weekend 8 scored more than 2 and 2 games found 8 goals for a grand total of 35 goals. On behalf of calcio fans everywhere: Thank you.
Cagliari 1 - Lazio 0: You can’t root against Cagliari. They have a nutjob of an owner who spends half his time angling for an extra’s spot on CSI: Miami and a squad that is overwhemingly underwhelming. Yet, here they are, four points away from relegation after fighting their way to a 10 man victory over a club that was playing Real Madrid in the Champions League just a few months ago. Alessandro Matri flicked a splendid header into the side netting in the 88th after coming on just 15 minutes earlier. And there’s your game. (If you’re Lazio, feel free to hit the panic button any time now.)
Livorno 1 - Napoli 2: Somebody alert the media, Eddy Reja finally realized the immensely talented Emanuele Calaio is worthy of a start. This was his first start since Agust 26th - yes, the first game of the season - and he responded with two goals. Who’s taking bets he’ll be in the lineup next week?
Milan 2 - Palermo 1: 94th minute. Pippo. Just beats the line. I can’t stand the man, but holy hell is he a predator. Also, Amauri is pretty good, but we knew that already. Milan’s into 4th for now, and if Mutu’s injury is any kind of serious, their chances of staying there get a little bit better. Palermo, on the other hand, can begin their weekly Will Zampa Can The Coach? Watch.
Sampdoria 1 - Inter 1: The better Antonio Cassano plays, the more I worry about him being added to the Euro 2008 roster. I’m still torn. That aside, it was another week, another beaut of a goal/performance from Talentino, who is looking like the steal of the summer mercato right now: loan move, Real Madrid is paying all but 1m of his 4m+ salary and his buyout is only around 5.5m (if I recall correctly). That’s grand theft larceny.
Amidst all this “crisis” talk, Inter managed to get one back to pull even and have a still comfy cozy 9 point lead. Crisis my ass. Oh, and they play Roma on Wednesday. Simple: Inter wins, season’s over. Roma wins and Inter actually finds itself in some turmoil, things could get interesting. Draw? Who the hell knows.
Roma 1 - Fiorentina 0: Probably not the scoreline everyone was expecting. For a one goal encounter, it was fairly exciting. The story going out, however, is that Addy Mutu got his knee caught under Doni and had to be subbed off for Papa Waigo and his grape-smuggling shorts. The Viola were actually more dangerous without him on the pitch, but it’s a big loss. Results to be known today.
Also, Cicinho played a marvelous game despite being disillusioned about his position on the field (he must’ve confused “right back” with “striker” a couple times, but hey, no complaints here) and scored the lone goal, possibly winning himself a spot in Wednesday’s lineup for the massive matchup. Only he got himself sent off a few minutes from time. Brilliant.
Empoli 2 - Catania 0: Not so much about anything going on with Empoli as it was about Catania’s travels. Here’s a stat: 0 wins, 5 draws and 8 losses and a -14 goal differential away from home for them. So if your team is playing Catania at home any time soon you should be really, really confident.
* - Livorno’s hosting Catania next on March 2nd. Feel free to bet heavily against the Sicilians that day.
Atalanta 2 - Siena 2: There was apparently a very exciting 15 minute stretch in this match, because all of the goals came during that period, just before halftime. One of the goals is supposed to be “comical”, but I can’t for the life of me find any highlights or the sort. In short, decent result for both. Blah.
Udinese 3 - Genoa 5: Rambo scored a cheeky little goal in the first ten minutes, The Prince of Udine converted two penos, and Giuseppe Sculli evened up the score just before half time. Then, it became The Marco Borriello Show…….

I wish I could share your sunny take on Calaio’s start, Chris. Unfortunately, I think Reja picking Calaio had more to do with holes in the lineup due to suspensions and illness as any sudden enlightenment on the coach’s part…let’s hope that the two goals help him realize that Calaio should be a starter, not a late game sub.

Calaio got two goals, but he can thank the Livorno defense for them. He was completely open on both goals. Seriously what has happened to Italian sides this year? It’s like they’ve forgotten how to defend properly.
The comical goal in Atalanta-Siena was basically a mix up at the back, Coppola came out of net to get a long ball, but the defender Manfredini decided to head it over the keeper, leaving Locatelli with an empty net.
Third, the best note about Empoli-Catania was the play of Sebastian Giovinco. Malesani has put faith in him and starts him all the time, and the Atomic Ant is repaying him with great performances. A nice goal he scored, nutmegging the defender before finishing with his right foot from outside the box.

I know Calaio was on the field due to Lavezzi’s flu. But reasoning aside, even Reja has to sit up and take notice for two goals - no matter how they come.

I realize that Marco, Parma is no better. I’m just pointing out that in past years the small teams used to have really good defenses and average attacks. Now it’s the other way around.
