Maccarone Coming Home

By: Martha | January 24th, 2007

Massimo MaccaroneWord on the street has it that Massimo Maccarone — once a highly valued import — is on the verge of ending his long English adventure. The player joined Middlesborough from Empoli in 2002 for a club-record transfer fee of £8.15 million, but apart from the diving header than moved the club into the UEFA Cup finals last year, his time at Middlesbrough has been a frustrating four-and-a-half years made up of too few goals and not enough appearances.

In hopes of reviving his career, Maccarone will reportedly sign a multi-year deal with Siena (a club with which he had a loan spell in 2005) early next week. The two clubs have negotiated some sort of agreement regarding the player’s hefty salary, and Middlesbrough, believe it or not, are letting him leave for free. Yes, that’s right: His value went from £8.15 million to nothing in just a few years. Ah, football. She is a cruel mistress.
