Is Man U’s Loss Juve’s Gain?

By: Martha | May 4th, 2007

Pretty Gabby.Just so you know, I’ve seen this story in exactly one place, so the odds of it being true are slim-to-none-ish. Understood? Ok, moving on.

Juve friend and neighbor Tuttosport reported yesterday that Gabriel Heinze’s inability to deal with Massimo Oddo during Man U’s Champions League dismantling by Milan on Wednesday was enough to get him on Sir Alex Ferguson’s “For Sale” list. And, since this is Tuttosport, you won’t be surprised to hear they claim Juve are allegedly the club closest to landing the Argentine. According to the report, Juve were initially interested in Nemanja Vidic (whose sucking on Wednesday could at least be excused by an injury), but were rebuffed and offered Heinze instead, whose price tag is rumored to be about £4 million.

Dubious though the whole thing undoubtedly is, there is one thread of undeniable truth in the story: Because Heinze’s time at Paris St. Germain overlapped with Juve coach Didier Deschamps’ stint at Monaco, it makes sense he’d be familiar with the player, and maybe even admire his mad skillz and shaggy hair. Beyond that, however, your guess as to the viability of the story is as good as mine.

Ick. I hate Gabriel Heinze. I was thrilled when my French guy Patrice Evra took his starting spot at ManU.

(Milan was lucky Evra wasn’t playing.)

Massimo Oddo was excellent, along with everyone else, on wednesday. He was playing like he did in the 1st half of the season with lazio.

They could probably get Heinze for cheap. His value, or lack thereof, is apparent.

I have mixed feelings on Heinze. I think he’s a pretty decent left back, though Evra is obviously better. He makes a good squad player. I’m not sure who SAF could replace him with. It’s pretty tough to find a better player for the same price who would be willing to take the back seat to Evra.

During the game, I think that Heinze just had a really bad night along with every other member of his team. Heinze’s inability to shut down Oddo reminded me of how Lyon’s Reveillere failed to shut down Mancini. Both fullbacks were blamed for defensive gaps, when the truth is, the entire team just sucked. Even the best back line in the world couldn’t have stopped Milan that night.

That match reminded me of the Lyon-Roma game, actually. It was destruction for two underachieving European teams (United and Lyon).

It was actually Heinze’s actions that led to Milan’s second goal. As a Milan fan, I was happy about that, but I think he’s a decent player overall.
