March 6th News Roundup, Plus the Domination of Away Sides (So Far)
By: Julian | March 6th, 2011This morning’s news roundup includes a Frenchman’s contract, Adrian Mutu’s redemption, and puns.
- Genoa’s Omar Milanetto had kind words for former teammate Andrea Ranocchia. He called him a golden boy and said that he has experience and a desire to be with Inter.
- Philippe Mexes’ future at Roma is still up in the air, but Milan are anxiously looking on.
- Prior to Fiorentina’s game to Catania, Viola coach Sinisa Mihajlovic proclaimed that Adrain Mutu needed to stop talking the talk and instead, do some “action.” As of the time of this writing, Fiorentina are up 2-0 over Catania, thanks to a Mutu double- two goals scored within 3 minutes of each other.
- Goal.com’s English site is often berated as little more than a festering ground for rumors, but their Italian site is very credible and superb. They also feature fantastic puns, an aspect of grammar that this author is particularly in love with. For example, Cesena beat Sampdoria this morning, thanks to an early goal from Marco di Parolo and a double from Emanuele Giaccherini. Goal’s headline? “Senza PAROLO”- a play on the Italian phrase “Senza parole”, “Without words”.
- Alessandro Del Piero has spoken about the Juventus’ fans complaints given the bianconeri’s (lack of) form: “We have a need and a duty to do better. The fans are disappointed? It’s understandable.” Both coach Gigi Del Neri and Sampdoria tactician Mimmo Di Carlo had their cases up for review. It appears as if Del Neri will stay on, but Doria want 24 hours to review the latter’s position.
Most Serie A games are going on right now, with the exception of Lazio-Palermo, which will be on at 2:45 PM EST. European action is returning next week which explains the earlier games- it allows teams in the competitions more time to rest/train.
————————————–
Though this is very likely to change by the time today’s games are over (Inter and Fiorentina in particular are doing their damndest to ruin this), the first three games of Serie A matchday 28 featured a rather remarkable similarity:
All three away sides won. In the case of Roma, perhaps it isn’t a surprise- after all, they played lowly Lecce, and who can’t beat them? Turns out Roma nearly couldn’t, relying on a 90th minute rigore to progress. Juventus continued a dire run against Milan at home, and Cesena pulled off an enormous shock against Sampdoria, who go from crisis to crisis.
Sometimes playing away isn’t quite so bad. Unless you’re Roma. Then nearly everything is an ordeal.
