Marco Materazzi, Man of Peace
By: Martha | January 23rd, 2007
Who would have guessed the World Organisation for Peace cared about football? In fact, they care so much about it they put together a book called Football and Peace in the World every year, filled with “peace messages from the presidents of football associations worldwide.” Given the name of the book, I was sort of hoping for messages from peaceful people, pleading with non-football nations to let the Beautiful Game into their lives, but I suppose messages of peace will do.
As far as I can tell, however, this book of inspiration is not published in bulk. Instead, a single copy is given annually to the footballer the WOFP believe most effectively represented their message over the past year. Or something. This year, the group singled out the obvious symbol of peace in a violent, war-like footballing world: Marco Materazzi. Though WOFP press materials said something about Matrix getting the award because he’s both an ambassador for the organization and a World Cup winner, I think we all know this is about taking a headbutt square in the chest without fighting back — Materazzi’s our generation’s Gandhi, except tall, violent and Italian. And wearing a silly hat.

Why don’t we ask Sheva’s testicles exactly how “symbol of peace” should be defined here?
