Marry Me, Zampa. Seriously. Marry Me.
By: Martha | November 26th, 2007
God damn. Just when you start to turn your back on Maurizio Zamparini for his periodic semi-racist rants, he turns around and does something so spectacularly awesome you can hardly keep from hugging him. Today, happily, is one of the days for hugging.
Oddly silent since Juve’s demolition of his club last night, the Palermo president finally spoke by pulling the trigger (as PalermoSteven had been hoping he would): Manager Stefano Colantuono has been sacked. Typical Zampa, right? What’s also typical of Zampa — not to mention utterly, fantastically awesome — is that he’s brought Francesco Guidolin in to replace him. FRANCESCO GUIDOLIN, people!
For those of you a bit late to the party, Guidolin was sacked by Zamparini last April, a firing that had been coming for about four months, and there was much rejoicing in the Palermo camp after he left. There was not, however, much winning, and within less than five week, Guidolin was back in charge, only to be relieved of his duties — again — once the season ended.
Apparently, though, Zamparini can’t live without a Guidolin to kick around, so he’s back in the job again, as of today. God, how great is this? I would like to propose that Zampa and Guidolin are the best sporting odd couple since George Steinbrenner and Billy Martin — they’re just that perfectly awful together.

Ok, Zampa is just nuts, I give him that, but what the hell is wrong with Guidolin?! I distinctly remember thinking the same things last Spring, my confusion has just doubled since then.
I think Guidolin has a massive man-crush on Barzagli and can’t stand to be away from him that long. Not that I blame him…

Guidolin is like that poor girl that always gets hurt by the same type of guy… But instead of a “type of guy” it’s the same one over and over again.
What an abusive relationship these two have; one is completely insane and loves to smack anyone and anything, and I guess the other one loves to take it.
How long until Guidolin gets sacked AGAIN? (I say December 2007) How long until Zamparini REHIRES him again? (I say June 2008)

Do you mean Guidolin in the last paragraph Martha? Otherwise I’m confused.

Thanks, tmc — I had Prandelli on the brain exactly of the news about his wife; that’s the top story in the news roundup for today. Very sad indeed.

Mike, it’s the stereotypical awful, abusive relationship, isn’t it? They can’t live without one another.
Steven, don’t fret — where you would be without the drama?! (:

Isn’t it amazing, Lisa? This morning, I’d never have said in million years that Guidolin would be back but now? Like KJ and ricci say, it somehow seems like the most natural thing in the world (albeit more than little bit sick).

It’s like a train wreck where you don’t want to watch but you can’t look away…I think Zampa just likes to let everyone know who’s in charge and when he feels down he just fires the first one he sees and sadly Guidolin is the first one he see’s everytime? I don’t know. It’s like he’s playing a game of he stays he goes with a flower picking it’s petals of. I’m glad he’s back hopefully Palermo will be able to start winning again. I want at least one of my fave teams to do something constructive this year.
