Meanwhile, Away From Serie A …
By: Martha | May 21st, 2007
You may not have heard, but Juventus are back. (You’re shocked, I know.) Thanks to their 5-1 demolition of Arezzo, the promotion that has been a foregone conclusion for most of the season is now official, and all the spending Juve have been talking about since December will soon commence. Of those already in Turin, Pavel Nedved recently announced he’d like to play for another season, while the futures of both Didier Deschamps and Gigi Buffon remain in question, at best. Alessandro Del Piero, meanwhile, who has roughly 149 goals this season (really only 20, a figure that sounds impossibly low), seems assured of staying around so, even without zillions of new strikers, Juve will be coming back to Serie A with a pile of goals at the ready.
And, among the youngsters, Inter’s Primavera squad won a Scudetto of their own yesterday, securing the club both an unofficial double and yet another mostly naked celebration. (What is it about winning things that makes men take their clothes off?) They took the youth title with a 1-0 win over Sampdoria, the lone goal scored on a PK by Mario Balotelli, a 16-year-old born in Palermo. Man alive. What were you doing when you were 16? Me, I was playing basketball, bumming rides from friends because I was afraid to drive, and generally being nerdy. Sigh. Yeah, that’s almost the same as playing nearly top-level professional football.
