Media Trying Hard to Create Totti Controversy
By: Martha | June 4th, 2007
Despite the fact that none of the material details have changed, the Italian media are putting impressive effort into making it sound as if Francesco Totti could be punished for his completely unsurprising absence from the national camp. Most of this, clearly, stems from Michel Platini’s recent pronouncement that players who refuse to heed national teams call-ups should face international bans, and the FIGC’s support of the proposal. Sounds scandalous, right?
But Totti’s not refusing to go to camp — he’s not being called; there’s a big difference between those two things, and he’s in no way risking punishment by staying home. Granted, the Azzurri could always use a little Totti action (particularly given his form this season), but he said long ago that he was taking a break, and it’s understood that, barring further complications with his ankle, he’ll declare himself available for the massive Euro qualifiers coming in September.
And, if we needed further indication of his intentions to return, Totti recently revealed he’s defying his doctor (He’s got some nerve, that Totti.) and will not having surgery this summer to get the metal plate taken out of his ankle — all the better to be fit to play France with, my dear.

If ESPN is reporting the likelihood of his returning (considering they bareky cover the peninsula) I think we can assume he will. Plus, with how dreadful they were Saturday, I am sure he watched and just counted the the squandered opportunities that he would’ve cashed in and thought, yeah I need to be back for the next Faroes match.

The funny thing is that Totti promised to return to the Azzurri “once the plate is removed from his ankle”… and now he announces that, despite his doctor’s insistence, he doesn’t want to remove them until after retirement. Totti’s to busy to be bothered with playing for Italy, and he just wants to help his Roma come in third place next season. BTW: u21 had a great game against Albania on Friday, and during the opening ceremony I noticed that Jersey-boy Johnny Rossi knows the words to the Italian national anthem… I hope that kids stays in Serie A; Parma would LOVE to keep him from ManU.

I think a player should want to play for the national team not be threatened into it. God forbid we become France?? I’m cringing at the thought..Awful.
