Mexes Gives In; Will Stay At Roma
By: Martha | June 8th, 2007
According to the Italian press, Philippe Mexes (AKA The Prettiest Man in Football) has gotten over his irritation at Roma’s £1.7 million (non-Totti) salary cap, and is going to sign a four-year contract extension later today. Though the fact that I can’t find this story anywhere but Channel 4 makes it immediately suspicious, it never really seemed likely that Mexes would leave, despite the fondest wishes of Tuttosport and other Turin-based rumormongers.
Assuming this actually happens, it’ll be interesting to see if Mexes ends up seeing out the deal; if Roma aren’t willing to adjust their pay structure in the future (something that seemingly will come only if the money fairy pays them a visit), they’re probably going to have to accept that the defender’s eventual departure is inevitable. If Mexes’ career continues on its current path, he’ll soon be offered money that dwarfs that £1.7 million/year and it’s going to be awfully hard for him to say no. I know he’s loyal to the club and all, but there are limits — not everyone can be Lucarelli.
Or am I not giving Mexes enough credit? Would he stay forever, totally out of love? Because, you know, that happens in football ALL the time. What do you think, Chris?

It’s done. If you can read Italian it’s the top story on http://www.ilromanista.it behind the Totti capocannoniere t-shirt ad which is really starting to drive me mildly insane.
As for the pay structure, it’s really shady. Montella definitely makes more (something like a ridiculous 5.5m next year), De Rossi I believe makes like 3.3-3.5m - and in line for whole lot more - and Mancini 3.1m. So I don’t know how it works out but once Franco Sensi passes on, he’s in mighty frail condition, I think everyone expects Rosella to sell the club and that’s when the players will get their big money (owning Roma for the right person would be a massively profitable business venture). The younger guys like Mexes will stick around and wait and still make nice coin while doing so, though I do think Mexes loves Rome. Plus, their younger talent like Okaka Chuka, Curci, De Rossi and Aquilani are all future/current stars, so the future is promising on a football level too. I think it’s a multitude of things that kept him around.

There are much prettier Mexes photos than this one. Where’s the beef, Martha?

Just reading Chris’s comment. I think Okaka Chuka sounds like something that would require the Heimlich maneuver.
(It’s Friday. Can you tell?)
