Midweek News Roundup: Jovetic’s Return, Gillet’s Potential Sacrifice, Suspensions, and More

By: Julian | April 26th, 2011

In fantastic news for Viola fans today, it looks as if Stefan Jovetic is edging ever closer to his return. The player has flown to Germany to undergo a series of tests to determine if he’ll be able to return for the final two matches of the season. Jovetic has been out for about nine months now, after suffering a serious knee injury during the summer before the season began. The doctor he’s visiting now is the same one that operated on his knee in October, Dr. Boenisch.

As Fiorentina look to regain a talisman, Bari may be on the verge of losing thiers. Team captain and goalie Jean-Francois Gillet spoke today on his future, and classy as ever, kept the club’s well-being over that of his own:

BARI VS LAZIO

When I spoke in the past in press conferences, someone thought that I was giving my goodbye to Bari. I want to clarify that it was not like that: what I said was misinterpreted. I have a contract here and I would want to respect it, but obviously there will be a need to evaluate the club’s program after a disappointing season. Above all, there will be a need to take into account the wishes of the club, if it wants to make money by selling players worth more. If my transfer would serve to save Bari, we’ll see, but that does not mean that they’ll choose me.

The list of suspended players has been released, with the following players out for at least one matchday:

2 Matchdays (Miss Matchday 35 and 36): Inler (Udinese), Mauri (Lazio), Rudolf (Bari)

1 Matchday (Only miss Matchday 35): Poli (Sampdoria), Julio Cesar (Internazionale), Armero (Udinese), Colucci (Cesena), Dainelli (Genoa), Angelo (Parma), Milanetto (Genoa), Palacio (Genoa), Van Bommel (Milan), Volta (Sampdoria), Zaccardo (Parma)

As Sampdoria near the end of the season, the clubs has two big problems it must face: potential relegation and a loss of players. The latter could easily happen without the former, and one player that is actually certain to leave this summer is Reto Ziegler. The 25 year old Swiss leftback did not renew his contract and is a free agent come this summer, and will have no shortage of suitors given his rather prodigious talent. Cristiano Del Grosso is rumored to be his replacement at the club.

And finally, as the summer transfer window opens, there are a myriad of rumored player deals that may occur once the season ends. Some of them seem rather believable, such as Milan purchasing Kevin Prince Boateng from Genoa, but others are much more farfetched. Since strange things happen no matter how odd the rumors are, here are some of them that just refuse to go away:

  • Riccardo Montolivo to Inter or Juve
  • Abel Hernandez, Gianluigi Buffon, Simone Kjaer to Roma
  • Mirko Vucinic, Carlos Tevez, Alex Sanchez to Inter
  • Wesley Sneijder to Manchester United

Again this isn’t to say that any of the above are going to occur, or even that they’re likely. Simply put, these are the rumors that keep on being repeated around calcio sites and newspapers, and none seem to be too far off of the realm of possibility- none of them link, say, Lionel Messi to Bologna. As it stands, however, these are merely fantacalcio offerings.

I've got a soft spot for Jovetic (I always buy him in FIFA lol) so it will be good to see him back. With so many top-heavy leagues in Europe the competitiveness in Italian soccer this year has been a lot of fun to watch.

If Bari show they have some kind of plan to get back into Serie A, Gillet will no doubt stay. If they're looking for another decade ambivalent spell in Serie B, he deserves better.

    Aaron,

I have a plan...how bout you and I head back to our roots and take the reigns of AS Bari! Got any rich uncles? lol

  • agiamba

I wish. 8mil to own Bari. If that!

  • Wow, Jovetic finally coming back? I mean, selfishly, I'm glad he wasn't back when we played Fiorentina. :) But he is a great player, it will be good to see him back on the pitch.

  • Respect for Gillet.

A good player and a great man.

If those jagoff owners had any class or sense, they erect a fuckin statue if il Capitano right outside S Nicola. The ultimate servant to an otherwise dysfunctional club

    Grande Capitano!!!
