Milan Take Super Cup; People Care In Spite of Themselves

By: Martha | September 1st, 2007

Sad.While a match between the holders of the UEFA Cup and the Champions League trophy is a nice idea, holding said match at the end of the week during the season is not, and it makes it hard to view the meeting as anything more than a glorified friendly, even if there is silverware involved. This season, though, the match was given tragic significance by the death of Sevilla’s Antonio Puerta, whose club was playing its first game without him n Friday’s Super Cup.

After Milan players stopped muttering about how the game shouldn’t have gone ahead, they and their supporters paid tribute to Puerta throughout the match, the fans with a large banner in his honor, and the players by joining Sevilla in featuring his name on the jerseys, under their own. They didn’t, however, pay tribute by not trashing the Spanish club and, after dominating the bulk of the match, Milan came away with a well-deserved 3-1 win, secured through goals by Kaka, Pippo Inzaghi (who can be counted on to score at least once in any European match, even one as fluffy as the Super Cup) and Marek Jankulovski, who gave Milan the lead with an impressive volley from a tight angle. No, Gila didn’t score. Thanks for asking, though.

I’m glad you notice I’m not JUST picking on the Milan player, k. (: I actually have much more sympathy for Gila than I do Adriano, though I realize that’s not really saying that much. At least Gila’s bitching is kept to a minimum, and he doesn’t go out and drink before training sessions and then wonder why he doesn’t play.

It was a pretty rousing comeback and, in many ways, a fitting tribute to poor Puerta. Italian teams always find it hard to play in these circumstances, just a game to be got out of the way.

Did you see the list of players called up for the France game? Can someone explain to me why is that Montolivo is not in that list? Cause I don’t get it.

Because Aquilani and Pirlo are better than Montolivo.

You’re right, Pat, he picked up an ankle injury in week one and wasn’t even on the bench for the Viola today, I don’t think.
