Milan v Reggina: Pity Poor Pippo
By: Martha | January 14th, 2007
After 60-odd minutes of running really hard, falling down alot, and crying about dozens of fouls that only he saw, Pippo Inzaghi was quite understandably substituted. Ancelotti was changing to a 4-5-1 and, since Inzaghi has been essentially useless this season, he was the obvious striker to sacrifice. In reponse to the news, “Super” Pippo stormed off the pitch, grabbed his coat from a flunky, brushed by the cameraman, and ran right into the changing room to pout. Classy, that. And, while Pippo was busy pondering the injustice of life, Alberto Gilardino — Milan’s only vaguely productive striker this season — scored to put Milan up 3-1. On a pass from Yoann Gourcuff, the man who had replaced Inzaghi.
Despite the comfortable-looking scoreline, there as nothing easy about the win for Milan. They’re not a bad team, but they’re certainly not the dominating force of the past few years. They give the ball away a lot and rarely look comfortable in defense — really, their strength now lies in the individual skill of their personnel, because players like Kaka (currently on the injured list), Pirlo and Seedorf are always capable of game-changing briliance. (I really love to watch Seedorf play. When he’s on, his vision of the game is extraordinary, and he consistently plays balls that make the whole field open up for other people — all they have to do is run onto his passes, and everything is suddenly easy.)
Also: Reggina are freaking good, or at least they were today. They put together wonderful attacking moves over and over and over again, and you wonder how the hell, even with the 11 point deduction, they’re not higher in the table. And then you see them finish, and it all becomes clear. For the love of god, people — put the ball on goal!
