Milan v Torino: More Booing

By: Martha | November 3rd, 2007

Dead RickyOnce again, Milan fail to score at home and, once again, despite vocal support during the match, the Curva did their share of whistling when the game ended. To be fair, though, not giving up any goals should probably be seen as progress, even to a team with firepower as limited as Torino’s.

On the other side of the ball, Walter Novellino should be fiercely proud of his team for calmly sticking to their game plan and never panicking under Milan’s nearly constant second-half pressure. Torino were incredibly organized, playing with the midfield sitting very deep and just refusing to let Milan break them down. There were a couple good chances early for Gila — he missed one and had the second saved by Matteo Sereni, who was fantastic on the night — and one great one late for Pippo, but Sereni and the Toro defense were equal to the task, soaking up pressure and dealing reasonably well with every attack.

As the second half wore on, Torino started to counter a little more aggressively: Eugenio Corini left the comfort of the box for the first time in the match, and Rosinaldo and David Di Michele (who looked sharp and went the full 90 in his first match of the season) created a few moments of tantalizing potential, but they were never able to get the last ball quite right.

For Milan, Clarence Seedorf was incredible as usual, doing pretty much whatever he wanted, apart from scoring, and his team kept the ball a whole lot better than they did at the start of the season. Part of that was to do with Torino sitting back, but Milan did look consistently threatening, which is something you couldn’t have said about them a month ago. Interestingly, all of Carlo Ancelotti’s substitutions with the score 0-0 were attacking — he went for broken with Serginho (a back, but a wildly attacking one), Pippo and Yoann Gourcuff (for Seedorf), but even all that skill and attacking prowess couldn’t break down the Toro backline.

Lucky for Milan, though, they’ve got Champions League on Tuesday, so they’ll score four goals in Ukraine and everyone will be happy for the rest of the week.

Well I’ve got to say, this was an entertaining match at least. Milan always looked dangerous, always attacking, had many many chances, just couldn’t capitalize. This match was a great improvement from the rest of their Serie A season I’d say. La Curva Sud was very vocal as well. Usually you can’t make out the chants, but I could actually hear the words on some of them. I don’t know if that’s just because I know them, or if they were actually being that loud, but they were giving a lot of support, which is always nice to see. And like you said Martha, CL on Tuesday=Goals Galore=Happy Milan fans.

So Martha did the Champions League really go to Il Diavolo’s head, is it getting old and stale at the San Siro or is it just bad luck?

at least ancelotti grew some balls and criticised Gilardino. Hopefully he gives him the hair drier treatment and get a bit more liveliness outta the kid. despite some recent good form i still think he is a fair way away from the player he is expected to be.

Torino really impressed in this match for me. Rosina was his usual self but it was the play of the CB’s and Di Michele and Corini in the MF that really blew me away. How could Di Michele spend so much time away from a match and still be that sharp at the San Siro? Good stuff. Milan’s scudetto hopes are gone by Giornata 11, I believe. Wonder if they’ll target anyone under 35 during the January window? They need some fresh blood that’s for sure.

Joe, I’m loving hearing someone other than me talk about Corini’s awesomeness. Thank you for that.

Roswitha, I’m not going anywhere near that.

milan need the giant man adriano from cross town rivals inter.the strikers are ok but they played a lot of games last seaon.the rossoneri need to rest big names in the wintert transfer.Kaka played so many games last season, no wonder he didnt feature in the coppa america.but somehow they will bounce back to their usual way.currently the best team in europe with 14 uefa titles, surely they will rediscover their form.but adriano or vieri are needed to rectify the attacking force.maybe they should entice Luca toni from bayern or Giusseppe Rossi from villareal.
