Mmm … Refereeing Scandal
By: Martha | September 26th, 2007
In order to keep things on the up-and-up, referee assignments in Italy are not revealed to the public until the day before the matches. Of course, that does nothing to avoid corruption with the referee designator himself can be bought off, but now that The Great Collini is in charge, everything is going to be different. Right? Or not.
The people at Livorno were so confident Daniele Orsato was going to be their referee for today’s game against Napoli that they announced it on their website. On Monday. When they weren’t supposed to know about it yet. Oops. Collina, quite understandably, flipped his lid and fixed the club with a baleful, bald stare, saying “I am very irritated and surprised by this.” In addition to talking sternly to Livorno, Collina has made a precautionary change to the officiating team for the match, replacing Orsato with Emidio Morganti and assigning three new assistants to the game.
While something clearly stinks here, I gotta say — if Livorno are paying for help from officials, they need to see about getting their money back, because they’re getting ripped off.

Something really funny would be if Inter complained that refereeing was the cause of their 2-2 draw against Livorno. :P
