More on the Coppa: At Least the Holders Sort of Care
By: Martha | November 10th, 2006
The last two games of the first leg of the fourth round (whew) of the Coppa Italia were played yesterday: Inter beat Messina 1-0 away on another goal by Julio Cruz, and Napoli scored a 1-0 home win over Parma. Blah blah blah, I know. But there actually is something interesting in all this — take a look at Inter’s teamsheet. Of course, as a larger club they’ve got a roster full of big names, so even when they use reserves, we’re familiar with a lot of them (see: Solari, who’s played a fair amount this year but usually as a sub, and poor Toldo, who never gets off the bench on the weekends). But look who else started: Samuel. Maxwell. Grosso. Cruz. Stankovic. I mean, damn.
I don’t know if it’s because they’re the holders and therefore have more at stake than the rest of the Serie A clubs or what, but Inter are taking this thing seriously, which is pretty cool. Thank you, Mancini, for (temporarily) restoring some dignity to the Coppa.

I think Inter takes the Cup so seriously because they know they’ll choke in the end in the league. Somehow they’ll find a way to lose to Torino on the last day of the season after being up 3-0 at halftime and Roma will pip them for the title. It’s their fate.

Roma, not Palermo? Oh Paul, ye of little faith!

I didn’t want to jinx them. Please tell me you were knocking on wood when you said that! I’ve been trying so hard to keep myself level headed about the possibility that they will be there in the end.
