Mutu Again Declares His Love For Fiorentina
By: Martha | October 19th, 2007
As we discussed in the comments yesterday, Adrian Mutu* is the rumored target of a whole lot of clubs, among them Manchester City (of course), Lyon, Real Madrid and, most recently, Roma. Every time a new story comes out and the Italian media ask Mutu for his reaction, his answer is always the same: “I love Fiorentina. I want to have the club’s babies. I’m never, ever leaving.” Or, if you prefer, “For me it’s all about purple shirt.” Though others may question his sincerity, the folks at La Gazzetta, at least, are convinced — the writer ended today’s article with this: “There are things that can not be bought, Mutu is one of them.” Wow. Think maybe his mom wrote it?
Mutu’s current contract will keep him in Florence for four more years, and he claims he wans to stay longer, but is in no hurry to sort out an extension this minute. Hmm. While the cynics among us assume he’ll jump for a Big Club sooner than later — the thought of playing at Real has to appeal to anyone with any ambition, as does moving somewhere where salaries aren’t restricted like they are in Florence — Mutu is an interesting case. He chased his dreams to London and all over Italy once, and it was a massive, humiliating disaster; he’s grown up a lot since then (I know I say that all the time, but that’s only because it’s true) and might see the future somewhat differently now. He’s learned, for example, to value security, and odds are slim that he’s ever going to be as comfortable and as appreciated as he is in Florence under Cesare Prandelli, the only manager who’s ever really understood him.
All of which is a long way of say that it wouldn’t surprise me to see Mutu stay around as long as Prandelli is on the Fiorentina bench, particularly if when the Viola secure a Champions League spot for 2008-2009.
*I’m going to try to make myself bold important names like everyone else does. That way you can just skim rather than wasting time and actually, you know, reading.
