Nedo Sonetti Needs a Hug

Pity poor Nedo Sonetti. He took a job with a club that was barely hanging on when he arrived, led them to losses in matches no one (apart from better players) could have helped then win, was told to suspend his best player, and ended up so miserable that he had to quit. Finally, some relief. He had no job, but at least he also no longer had to deal with the apparent nightmare that was Cagliari. Ah, but not so fast, Nedo: The chump they hired before you and who still has a contract with the club has gone all dignified and refused to come back, so I’m afraid your resignation has been rejected. Welcome home!

Can you imagine the shock? The poor, poor man. (If I could remember that line from The Godfather about how “they pull me back in,” I’d use it here.)

So Sonetti, through no fault of his own, is back in charge of Cagliari. He’s had a “frank” talk with Massimo Cellino, the complete lunatic who is his boss, and “knows what he must do.” Barring the appealing fantasy spun by Jeremy over at the brand new Cagliari blog (ignore the Arsenal header, the design’s not done yet), what must be done can’t realistically be bigger than a)not killing himself, and b)keeping his players from hiring (more) people to beat one another up. Frankly, I’m not sure he can do either at this point.

Sonetti leads his ragged bunch to Fiorentina this weekend, and I suppose if they can put shots on goal, anything can happen. Hey, and Pasquale Foggia’s back in training! If optimism existed in Cagliari any more, that would be a reason for it.
