New Italy Kit Unveiled

By: Francesco | February 4th, 2009

Some of you remember a couple of months ago when I posted that Puma was planning to kit Italy with a light blue/brown shorts combo to be worn at this summer’s Confederations Cup. Well, Puma has in fact made the new kit, but it is not as dramatic as we first thought. Puma has decided to celebrate Italy’s glorious past of the 1930’s, when the Azzurri were back to back World Cup champions in 1934 and 1938. Back then the kit was a lighter shade of blue than we have been used to seeing over the past few years and the badge was big. So following the same guidelines, Puma have unveiled the new Italy kit and this morning’s La Gazzetta dello Sport has it front and center. Pictures after the jump.

The kit, as you can see, is truly “Azzurro” and not royal blue as we’ve seen from Puma’s previous kits. Also, the FIGC badge has been enlarged to mimic the big badge the 1930’s kits had. There is also a tricolor stripe on the side of the kit and following 1994 kit we see a return of the hologram on the kit. The hologram says “Italia” and has the 4 stars above it. The kit will only be worn for the Confederations Cup, and then Puma will introduce new home and away kits for the 2010 World Cup.

Gazzetta also put out a little history of the Italy kit, here it is:

I want to see the style of the names and numbers before I pass judgment. The Euro jerseys didn’t look bad, except for the ridiciulous number font.

Love it! Matching socks and white shorts and we’re good to go! Hopefully just numbers and no names on the back.

Definitely going to buy one if they are going to be made available.

I love them also, they should keep them till the 2010 W.C. but i’d need to see the shorts also. they can ruin the whole outfit if they are horrible>> will that be worn in the Brazil-Italy friendly?

06-07 kit was probably my least favorite aesthetically but obviously holds a special place in all of our hearts. It just fit absolutely terrible though, the front neck was higher than the back neck…ridiculous to make a shirt like that.

will 100% be buying this kit if they make it available to the public.

its such a racket that they keep on making new jersey designs every two years. I hope they keep this one for a while. They look pretty nice. The ones from Euro were alright but the number font was just silly.

not bad, its got a good rustic feel to it, makes me imagine toni doing tardelli’s howl after scoring the winning goal in the final…

I absolutely love it. Better than anything I’ve seen in years. I just hope they have white shorts with that, in proper Azzurri tradition (I’ve never been able to stand the “all blue” kit).

On a completely unrelated note – guys, please give me a five stars rating on this: http://www.islandreefjob.com/#/applicants/watch/qyh662-sdWs

    Lazio.
Especially “fetching” in the white on sky blue combination.

As to this jersey, I would much prefer it without the underprint.

alessio i think the old Nigeria jersey. i think. well quite a few teams had that similar pattern.

it looks like it came from 1990-1996.

the jersey isnt bad, i like it because its old school, vintage. it would’ve been better if they went back even further, make it look more classier.

Asem, no names is just personal preference. I like when only the number is displayed on the back of the shirt.

i do like the retro, simple styling of the shirt but could do without the subtle ‘embossing’. i remember diadora doing something like that with the wc 94 jerseys and, likewise, nike for their euro 06 jerseys. i had imagined something quite different when i originally read the written description a few months back but these dont seem to be too far off the ‘traditional’. i was under the impression that they were going to be drastically different and with a paler blue like the lazio shirts. i particularly like the tricolore stripe down the side. pretty slick.

i agree about the font. the current one used by puma looks like its ripped off from an atari logo. i’m not sure why anyone would have proposed that especially since i thought the lower case font they used for the wc 06 jerseys was pretty unique and looked decent.
