Newcastle the New Spurs!
By: Martha | July 16th, 2007
For the first part of the summer, we could count on Spurs to pop in whenever there was a big name Serie A player looking to make a move: Whether the English club actually wanted to player or not, the papers in England were eager to associate them with a bid. Shockingly, not one of the rumors has turned out to have even a grain of truth in it, but I suppose hope springs eternal in London. They are, after all, on the list of possible Bobo destinations.
This week, though, it appears as if Newcastle are making their own bid to replace Tottenham as the (fake) go-to English club, because now that Sam Allardyce is in charge, the British press have decided all the big names will be flocking to the Northeast of England. Among those names? None other than Fabio Cannavaro and Andrea Barzagli, the same man who just earnestly declared his loyalty to Palermo.
Yeah, that’ll happen. Apart from the undeniable facts that a)Canna once played in Newcastle-esque black and white, and b)the Toon have long been and seemingly will always been dreadful at the back and are desperately in need of reliable defenders, there’s unlikely to be any truth to this. While Big Sam might be interested in the Azzurri pair, the odds that he actually thinks either will move to Newcastle are slim; it’s hard to imagine NUFC even taking the time it would take to make a futile approach for either of them.
Ah well. At least it’s not Spurs.
