News Round-Up When There’s Not Much Going On
By: Martha | October 29th, 2007
•Luigi De Canio has finally been confirmed as new QPR boss. (And that is officially the last time I mention that club here, I promise.)
•Inter-haters rejoice: First-choice keeper Julio Cesar (who was replaced at the half against Palermo) has a messed up back, and back-up stud Francesco Toldo was just revealed to have a broken bone in his foot. This means little-seen (unless you’re like me and spend a lot of time looking at pictures of Inter in training) third-stringer Paolo Orlandini will be in goal Wednesday against Genoa, if not beyond. Super.
•Speaking of injuries, nothing is broken in Dejan Stankovic’s ankle, but he’s expected to join Patrick Vieira on the Inter sidelines for at least several weeks while his ligaments knit. Down in Rome, meanwhile, Franecsco Totti is back in training, but his status for Wednesday’s derby is listed as 50/50 (exactly like it was during the return leg last season, when he started and played 75 minutes).
•Oh, and Marco Materazzi is, at long last, back in full training with Inter. Woo hoo! (Of course, Walter Samuel and Ivan Cordoba are playing so well together Matrix might struggle to get back in the team, but he’s got a spot waiting for him in the Azzurri, if nothing else.)
•Juve’s dressing rooms caught on fire today. Bwaahahahhahaaaa!
•Livorno President Aldo Spinelli is talking again about Cristiano Lucarelli returning to the club. While it makes sense for him to seek a move if Shakthar go out of Champions League before Christmas (though, since they’re currently joint-top of Group D with Milan, it might be a moot point), the amount of money he’s making in Ukraine dwarfs anything Livorno could ever afford. Also, how sad is it that all Spinelli can think of to do to fix things is fire managers and talk about Lucarelli coming back? It’s going to be a loooong season for Livorno.
•Lazio? Match-fixing? No, no! When Delio Rossi told Claudio Lotito that Lecce needed to be “softened when they come here to play,” they were talking about softening them up for so they could buy Cristian Ledesma, not so they could beat them. Jeez, so suspicious!
•Breaking news: Real Marid have officially given up on trying to buy Kaka. Well, at least until the next time they talk about it — I’ll give it til January at the latest.

1) Juve: HAHAH. that’s what you get. Bastards.
2) Inter: HAHAH. that’s what you get. Bastards.
3) Matrix: Good to see him fit. Hopefully he can play for the Azzuri to fix up that back line.
4) Real: January? Why Martha, that’s like a century to them. I’ll give it until next week.Posted from

Also, while I really hate Juve with a passion, I think in all fairness, the goals should be disallowed, the game should be ruled a 1-1 tie, if not pushed in favor of Juve, and any cards resulting from the dives (i.e. Buffon’s) should be removed and given to the diver (i.e. Zalayata, and yes, I know I can’t spell and I’m too lazy to look him up.)

mele419 somehow i get the feeling you don’t hate Juve with a passion. To say the fair result should be 1-1 ok i can buy it but if your suggesting the result be reversed and a win reward to Juve, surely you jest.

Mele, while I agree with you in theory, once they start doing that they’re instantly on a hilariously slippery slope, because where do you draw the line? I mean, Thierry Henry dove to win the free kick that allowed France to draw even with Spain in the World Cup — do you take that goal away on review, too, or only PKs? And how do you decide which ones to take away? It’s just not workable, I don’t think, especially it Italy, where there’s so much (suspicion) of corruption already.
And re: January, you’re right, I’m giving them way too much credit.
(Shut up about Inter. This is a near-crisis situation, dammit. I wonder if Zlatan will be backup keeper on Wednesday. He can do everything else, why not that, too?)

I really do hate Juve with a passion. But I hate cheating and injustice just as much. I mean, for pulling antics like that, Juve should get something out of it, really.
And while that is true Martha, some goals, such as those, could easily be taken away. Blatant dives leading to direct PK’s should be taken away. Free kick goals and the like shouldn’t, for the reasons you said, too much corruption, too much difficulty in deciding etc etc.And Inter in near crisis? LOOK AT MILAN! Two wins so far in this season! TWO! And this is without major injuries! (not counting Ronaldo, since, well he’s been gone so long no one remembers he’s even part of the club.)

Hey, at least with Cesar getting injured, Inter will have at least one Italian on the pitch!

Thanks Mele, that’s what I’m going for. (: I keep forgetting, though, and having to go back through posts and add them.
(And you’re right — Inter’s goalkeeper issues are a picnic with champagne and chocolates compared to what’s going on with Milan.)

And, Paul, just wait til Matrix gets back — there’s gonna be Italians EVERYWHERE!
