News to Ruin My Morning, Or: Figo is Going Where?!

By: Martha | December 27th, 2006

Check out the bling! For those of us who pay attention to such things (we are small, pathetic group), the first half of the season brought endless rumors about where my Figo will be plying his trade once the summer transfer period is over. The most common destinations mentioned in the press are Inter (one minute he’s had a massive blowup with Mancini, the next he’s on the verge of being signed through 2008) and somewhere in the US — though, it seems, not New York — thanks to the blessed Beckham rule. Both options seem fairly plausible and, most importantly of course, pass the Martha Threshold of Acceptability, because I’d be able to watch him play fairly easily in both places. This morning, though, a giant, honking monkey wrench was thrown into the whole thing with the news that he’s on the verge of signing with a Saudi Arabian club. Say what now?

According to reports in the Portuguese press, Figo is about to join Al Ittihad for a year in a deal reportedly worth £3 million. And, to make things even more bizarre, this is apparently going to happen NOW — like, he’ll be playing there next month. Now, I freely admit that any weird news about Figo is likely to send me into a tizzy of distress, so I might not be the best person to look at this story rationally, but how could it possibly be true?! Sure, it was just a few years ago when aging superstars would spend a year or so making piles of money in Qatar by not training and playing 30 minutes every weekend, but £3 million is not exactly piles of money in today’s footballing world. Plus, he’s playing well in a team that’s going to win the Scudetto — what’s not to like? I mean, he’s definitely not happy with his role at the moment, but being annoyed is a long way from leaving the country. Right? Please, someone tell me there’s no way this is happening.

  • And of course by “rumors and junk in a humorous and entertaining package" I meant, “rumors and junk in a humorous and entertaining package, along with insightful and knowledgeable football coverage."

But you obviously knew that, right?

  • Ah, Marcello. What is more enjoyable in life than "rumors and junk" in a humorous and entertaining package? Those rumors and junk are what everybody really wants to know about, but won't admit. You said it yourself: it's addictive.

  • Marcello

This website is all rumors and junk, it makes me sick but I addicted to the gossip. If this is true with Figo I will be kissing this websites' ass!

  • 1)Word, Paolo! I'm sure no one in the Saudi league will offer that sort of adoration -- perhaps we should write a letter to remind him of that.
2)Yes, Laurie, I've got my mourning clothes ready, as well as the dark cloth with which I will drape all the windows and doors if the unspeakable happens.
3)Comments are down?! I'm sure mine are running entirely because I didn't know. They're bound to go down any second now.

  • Oh, Martha. This is sad news indeed. Are you preparing your black mourning clothes in case this goes through?

(P.S. How come your comments are up and running and ours aren't?)

  • Paolo

Who would ever consider leaving a team where Materazzi kisses your feet!?

I hope he stays. He may not be the fastest guy around the San Siro but he definately has one of the best touches. He is an impact player, as we saw last Saturday, and I hope he stays and I think Inter needs him.
