Newsie Bits For a Sleepy Saturday
By: Martha | March 10th, 2007
Does anyone else get the feeling that calcio is resting, trying to prepare itself for the derby tomorrow? Well, it’s what I’m doing, anyway.
•Adriano, not surprisingly, won’t be playing tomorrow. Remember, though — it’s because he’s not fit, not because he’s taken up permanent residence into Mancini’s doghouse. No, really.
•I don’t want to spoil anything for those of you Tivoing it so all I’ll say is: If you hate Juve, you’ll want to watch their game against Brescia. Magnificent stuff, at least through the first hour. The magic of Serse Cosmi at work, obviously. (Knocking frantically on wood to avoid jinxing the result.)
•Impossibly, tomorrow’s game will be Paolo Maldini’s 600th Serie A appearance for Milan. And, now that he’s healthy, he’s giving us hope we may not have to experience life without him as soon as we originally thought — he told La Stampa: “Now that my knees seem to be working again … I’d like to carry on for another season.” From your mouth to (the other) God’s ears, Paolo. From your mouth to God’s ears.
•Ronaldo would be wise to add some earplugs to his kit for tomorrow’s game, because a group of Inter ultras have reportedly bought 30,000 whistles (Where do you get 30,000 whistles? Do you think they stockpile them, just for occasions like this one?) to hand out at the match. The plan, clearly, is to deafen Ronaldo into sucking, or at least into further weight gain. You may not have heard, but Inter are a little angry at him for joining their cross-town rivals.
•Just so you know, the scream of rage you will be hearing periodically throughout the weekend is me, expressing my fury over the fact that I can’t watch the Palermo-Fiorentina game on TV. I officially hate RAI International, GolTV and FSC, which I’m sure is breaking their hearts.

Last summer I saw a program that said Maldini had played his 800th game for Milan!!!

So if the rumors are true, a Milan backline next year of:
Oddo–Nesta–Cannavaro–Maldini
Wow that’s old. But I could look at it for hours…
