Newsie Bits, Mostly About Transfers
By: Martha | August 23rd, 2007
•The Cicinho saga is finally over, with Roma paying Real Madrid €9 million for his services. (Chris has all the details on this one, as well as lots and lots of video evidence of Cicinho’s awesomeness.)
•Ronaldinho is getting his Spanish passport on Monday. This blessed event makes him fit precisely into Adriano Galliani’s description of his mysterious Mr. X, a player he said would be getting EU citizenship papers in August. Yes, that dream is still alive.
•Disgraced Sampdoria striker Francesco Flachi has been training with a local amateur side in the hope that his appeal (to be heard at the end of the September) will somehow be accepted, and he’ll be allowed to play this season. In other words, he’s hoping traces of cocaine in your urine are suddenly seen as a good thing by FIGC.
•Stefano Fiore really did move to Mantova. His contract is for a single year, but he has the built-in option to stay on for two more if the team achieves promotion this season.
•Inter are still eying Deco hopefully, and plan to offer Barcelona €8 million for him next week. In addition, in the face of Marco Materazzi’s possible long-term absence from the team, the Nerazzurri have suddenly renewed their interest in Andrea Barzagli, and have also begun sniffing after Spartak Moscow defender Radoslav Kovac.
•Marcello Lippi chose TV punditry over managing the Libyan national team. Well, duh.
•Holy crap — the three Catania players who challenged their club for making them train apart from the rest of the team actually WON! After deliberating for several hours yesterday, FIGC’s Board of Arbitration this morning announced a favorable decision, and ordered Catania to reintroduce Armando Pantanelli, Mattia Biso and Gianluca Falsini into regular training immediately. Whoa. Not only that, but the trio are also going to get money for their pain and suffering — the amount will be determined at another hearing on September 20.
•Despite playing in Spain, Fabio Cannavaro has decided to blame the league’s refusal to move the Serie A start date up for his second-half ineptitude yesterday. Whatever works for you, Canna.

I think Canna should be given like a 3 year grace period after his performances last summer in Germany. Seriously, he was unbelievable. It’s the least we can do.

I disagree, Chris. I mean he was a man possessed in Germany. The finest example of a central defender I’ve seen since…really since ever. The way he came in and routinely broke up plays and provided a steadying force with Gigi in the back was incredible. But…..
As a Napoletano it really saddens me to see not only Canna’s form drop so dramatically but the making excuses for it hurts worse. If you suck, just say you suck and you’ll commit to doing better and blah blah blah. Really, unless he starts regaining some type of form with Madrid (last year was more down than up) than I really wish he’d retire from the Azzurri.Posted from

K’s right, Real haven’t exactly proven to be beneficial to the careers of foreign central defenders.
(Dammit, Deco better be staying.)

I agree that the late Serie A start contributed to the poor showing in Hungary, but it shouldn’t have been Cannavaro saying it, even if he is captain. His performance last night was bad enough that coming from him it sounds like an excuse.
