Not Content to Burn Them, Maccarone Blows Up Bridges, Then Runs The Pieces Through a Wood-Chipper

By: Martha | February 2nd, 2007

Oh, my life is so terrible. Pity me and my money. As Bob mentioned yesterday, Massimo Maccarone, the one-time golden boy whose services cost Middlesbrough £8.15 million in 2002, has celebrated his return to Italy with an attack on his old club so petulant and over-the-top that it’s a wonder the press didn’t laugh in his face when he shared it will them. (I picture Maccarone screaming, bits of spittle flying out of his mouth, while the press desperately try to avoid eye-contact with one another.) Get a load of this vitriol: “My time at Middlesbrough was sheer hell … The so-called wonderful Steve McClaren is the most hypocritical and two-faced person I have ever had the misfortune to meet. Only in England could they appoint someone with such obvious limitations to become the national coach.” Um, damn.

Now, McClaren may well be a well-disguised tool of the devil, but the fact that Maccarone also tears into both Gareth Southgate — “He promised me I would play six or eight games in a row but he never kept his word.” — and the club’s training methods — “The training methods at Middlesbrough are a quarter of a century out of date and they make you train with the reserves if you are not in the first-team squad. It shows a total lack of respect and devastates team spirit.” — makes Maccarone look less like a victim and more like a giant, thundering nightmare of a player.

It’s clear from reading his statements that not a single thing that went wrong in his four-plus years with the club was his fault, and that the world around him is to blame for any imperfections in his life. What is he, five?

Boy you’ve just got whiners everywhere you look this morning, don’t you? Ever feel like you’re running a daycare?

Hey, speaking of petulant pouting, are your Italian sources turning up anything on a Mexes injury?

Laurie, all I can find is that he a)”brought back a botta to the left foot” (thank you, Google), and b)likely won’t play Sunday against Inter. No one seems to know what’s actually wrong with him, though.

Ooh. A botta to the left foot. I hear those can be painful. Although when they talk about bringing back a botta… Well, it almost sounds like a social disease, doesn’t it?

    Thanks for checking!

This is it. I can feel it. Roma wins Sunday 3-0. Totti scores twice. Matrix runs into somebody, totally flops, and breaks an ankle on the way down.
