Nuno Gomes in Italy Return? God, Don’t Tease Us So!
By: Martha | June 27th, 2007
Early in his career, Portuguese international Nuno Gomes spent a couple of very productive years at Fiorentina, even winning the Coppa Italia during his first season with the club. During the Viola’s financial crisis, however, he was sold off, and has spent the last five years with Lisbon side Benfica, for whom he’s now vice-captain under Simão. Though he’s been a sometimes-spectacular contributor at Benfica, he’s also faced a lot of niggling injury problems and only played six games last season, scoring one goal.
Despite the fact that his contract with Benfica runs through 2009, rumors suddenly appeared today — both in Portugal and Italy — that Nuno Gomes may be on his way out. Though the papers in Portugal today say no more than that the player could be on his way to unnamed clubs in England and Italy, both the player’s own website and the Italian press are quite convinced Lazio (or West Ham) is his most likely destination. As far as I can tell, it’s been decided at Benfica that the 30-year-old — once the club’s biggest-ever buy — is surplus to requirements, and it seems they’d like to sell him now when they can get something in return, rather than waiting and letting him go on a free when his contract expires.
According to reports, the asking price is €4.5 million; whether Lazio can (or would) pay that for a 30-year-old is anyone’s guess. (It would help to know something about their transfer budget, but I’ve got no idea — anyone?) Hopefully they’ll at least consider the staggering potential of a Mexes-Nuno Gomes clash during the Rome derby: The entire sport of football might actually spontaneously combust at the meeting of such womanly beauty in the middle of a manly grudge match.

They don’t have a huge budget, but €4.5m should be doable, especially if they sell of Rocchi, which I’m assuming they will. I’d bet those two are related. If not, they really need a playmaker and a keeper amongst other things, so I don’t know.
Did I mention Lazio sucks?

You didn’t, but I assumed. (I also will be careful not to tell you that I’m sort of starting to like them, and will definitely be won over if Nuno Gomes arrives.)
Is Lazio’s financial status more-or-less like Roma’s, ballpark-wise? Or do you know?

Ball-park they have a cap just like Roma, and I think they’re relatively in the same position, but they also have a lot of needs. They’ve been linked with a lot of obscure South American based player, which means, “we’re cheap.” They had a decent season but have next to no prayer of advancing in the CL, so they might spend just a little beyond their means to stay competitive.
Who likes Lazio? Do you also like Hitler? Or cancer? How about Robert Mugabe? You a big fan of them?

Decent season? Lazio had a fkn MIRACLE season. No players, no fans, no funds, no hopes and they still managed to finish third. THIRD!
And on Martha’s behalf, I’d just to point out that she has always stood for good, and has clearly stated throughout her illustrious career that she opposes genocide, disease, corruption, juventus, and the evil forces of Skeletor.

Thank you, Mike! (Though I also did sort of like the Decepticons. And I have a sneaking suspicion cancer got a bad rap.)

I really wanted to get a Decepticon tattoo when I was younger, but luckily my stupidity has some limits.
Are you going to miss the Transformers movie while in Portugal? I probably shouldn’t tell you how beautiful 30 ft robots fighting on an Imax 20 story screen will be, but you know what Juve hater, I just might rub it in. Maybe Mutu will be free that night…

Just as long as you were on the the side of G.I. Joe and not Cobra, you are alright by me Martha.

No clue on him… SLB is on the process of being bought off… Tevez will leave West Ham for Inter - will join Figo… ;-) There are rumours about Hugo Viana moving from Valencia to Benfica, but I don’t believe it… So, about Nuno Gomes going to Italy, I don’t know anything, Martha… He’s put to better use if in a formation with another striker, but I never thought much of him… Portuguese strikers, you know… If he was a winger, OK… ;-)
Well, he’s not that bad… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57xSQ3znamIPosted from

I’d love to see Nuno back in Serie A. He did fairly well for Fiorentina, and obviously he’s been great at Benfica and with the Portugese national team.
The Fiorentina fans took a while to warm to him, as he was ostensibly signed to replaced the legendary Batistuta. Since he didn’t delivery buckets of goals right off the top, the fans were a little uneasy, but eventually they came around.
I just wish he wasn’t going to Lazio, I can’t stand them.
