Odds and Ends as We Prepare to Eat Ourselves Sick

•The Azzurrini played the second half with 10 men in the freezing cold rain, but still managed to pull out a 1-0 away win over the Faroe Islands. The baby Italians dominated the match but left it late, winning on an 80th minute goal by substitute Nicola Pozzi.

•Sebastian Frey started for France today! Woo hoo! (I had to go out and don’t know how it went. If it was a disaster, do me a favor and don’t tell me.)

•In need of a manager, Birmingham City made a real, honest-to-God approach to Marcello Lippi. Seriously, they really did. (He said no, and managed to keep from laughing until they left.)

•Nine Ultas were in court in Genoa today in connection with prematch fighting ahead of the Genoa derby at the end of September; they face a wide range of charges and at least four will serve jail time.

•Apparently meeting regularly with the press is part of the treatment for depression, because Adriano was at it again yesterday, this time lamenting the fact that people “say that I’m resorting to alcohol to overcome my problems, but it’s not like that.” Hmm. I think maybe people say that because IT’S WHAT YOU FREAKING TOLD THEM YOU DID! Jeez.

•Another Frenchman wants to join Roma — this times it’s Lyon’s Sidney Govou who, according to his chatty agent, may make the move as early as January, possibly as part of an exchange deal for Mancini, whose extension is still pending.

•It’s being reported that Luca Toni is acting as a sort of informal market consultant to the Powers that Be at Bayern. Top of Toni’s list? Countrymen Andrea Barzagli and Gianluca Zambrotta. (Elsewhere, meanwhile, we’re being told that Zambrotta has decided to return to Italy, and will join Milan this summer.)

•Coming off every club’s favorite final fitness test, a charity match, Ronaldo reports that he’s “ready to play.” Good to know.

  I’m sorry but Frey fumbled in a Scheva cross/lob which made it 2-2. ;) But it wasn’t a total disaster a lá Scott Carson, no.

  Domenech is an idiot, I don’t know why he hates Serie A….but Frey is a good keeper (look at Fiorentina’s place, not his error) and Trezegol…..well…there’s no disputing his excellence.
