Odds and Ends from the Weekend

By: Martha | January 29th, 2007

Frank Lampard is happy I cropped out his gut.•Now it’s not just Juve who are supposedly tracking Frank Lampard, but Milan and Inter as well. All of this stems from Lampard’s lack of a new contact, and a strange new FIFA rule that allows players who signed long-term contracts at a young age to buy their way out after three years. I’m not entirely sure how it works, but the same rule is causing all sorts of Heinze-to-Italy rumors, as well.

•In a bit of news that comes as a surprise to absolutely no one, Roberto Mancini is denying he said any of the things he was quoted as saying in The Sun last week. But, you know, he’s pleased by the interest. In other words, he’s no fool and is not burning any bridges.

•Just because we needed a little more drama in the Ronaldo transfer, Milan and Real failed to iron out the financial details today, so the deal is not yet done. Sigh. Milan president Adriano Galliani is actually in Madrid doing the negotiating himself and, to his credit, he’s not packed his things and stormed out. Instead, talks will resume tomorrow, with an eye to somehow bridging the $1.3 million gap between the clubs.

•Though sadly no one really cares, former Juve supremo Luciano Moggi revealed on a TV show set to air Monday night in Italy that he was so distraught over Calciopoli he considered suicide. I wish I could understand the translation enough to edify you further, but it’s even more of a morass than usual — something about “the faith” saving him, though whether the faith was in god or football I can’t tell.

•The folks at Inter are beyond pissed about Ronaldo’s arrival in the Milan camp. So pissed, in fact, that they’re reportedly planning a bid for Ronaldinho this summer — not because they want or need him, you understand, but rather because Milan do and they want to crush Milan’s wishes into dust. MWAHAHAHA!

I just can’t see Lampard in Italy. Don’t know why. If he went anywhere outside of England, i can only picture him in a Real shirt. That being said, anyone can be picked up by Real (rolls eyes) except RibĂ©ry! (growls at anyone who thinks of stealing him from Marseille)

Moggi’s “faith”, he says, is the same that has inspired the Vicenza player Julio Gonzales, who was severly injured in a car accident in December and is apparently still in very serious condition. Comic relief moment here: Moggi considers himself a man of principles. Like his faith, I suppose, the exact nature of his principles is not specified.
