Odds and Ends to Prove that Life Goes On
By: Martha | November 12th, 2007
[If you're looking for the latest on the tragic events in Italy yesterday and their repercussions, go here. Serie B and C matches are suspended this weekend; as of right now, Serie A will resume on schedule, on November 25.]
•Adrian Mutu, in addition getting a hole knocked in his head yesterday, has been diagnosed with a severe thigh strain and is expected to be out at least three weeks, missing two matches each for Romania (Bulgaria and Albania) and Inter Fiorentina (Reggina and AEK Athens). Three weeks ends just in time for the Viola’s huge match against Inter on December 2; fingers crossed he’ll be back for that one.
•As Bob mentioned earlier today, there are bizarre reports today that Liverpool’s American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks have been secretly buying up Roma stock, possibly eying a takeover of the club. Mmmhmm. Good luck with that, fellas.
•English Sunday rag The News of the World claims to have spoken with Adriano, who told them a move to Manchester City would his first choice for a winter escape destination. The press in both England and Italy are pushing the story that the Brazilian could change places with Man City’s unhappy Italian, Rolando Bianchi, but this is the first time anyone’s even pretended to talk to Adriano about it. (Mr. Burns, needless to say, denies any such thing is in the works.)
•One win and six draws though 12 matches wasn’t enough to keep Siena boss Andrea Mandorlini his job: He’s been sacked and replaced with — wait for it — last year’s boss, Mario Beretta, who achieved a minor miracle by keeping the team up last year, but lost his job shortly after the season ended.
•Just a few weeks after making his return from a lengthy gambling ban, Torino’s David De Michele is set for another long spell on the sidelines, this time because of a knee injury he suffered in yesterday’s draw with Catania. He was rushed the hospital after the injury because of fears his leg had been broken, so I suppose the month out that’s being projected is a whole lot better than the alternative.
•Inter want Tomas Rosicky, so much that they just might splash out £10 million on him in January. No, really.

I like that Bianchi kid, but I’d hate to see him to Inter…
Then again, they need a homegrown product

COME ON. We know how much you’d love to see some Mutu-Moratti action but give it a rest already.

Ow, wow. Yeah, that’s embarrassing. God, it flowed off my fingers so smoothly, too.

Martha admit it… somewhere in your house there’s a Mutu doll wearing an Inter jersey.

If only I could find a Mutu doll (oh, those wasted hours on eBay), there definitely would be. But perhaps I’ve said too much …

Didn’t I read that story in Penthouse Forum?

Inter can keep their filthy nerazzuri paws off the adorable mini Arsenal midfield, thanks.

I really like Mutu’s fishnet head thing. I think it’s set to be a hip new trend.

Pazzini wore one earlier this season, Abby, so it’s at least sweeping Fiorentina.

All things considered, this isn’t too bad for Mutu. Romania are already qualified for Euro 2008. Hopefully Fiorentina will be able to get a victory away to Reggina without him. And as far as the trip to Athens, that will be a little tricky without their best offensive player, but Fiorentina are in good shape so far to advance to the next phase of the UEFA cup.
Hopefully this gives Mutu a chance to rest up and heal his leg to be at full strength for Inter’s visit to the Franchi since he’s played a lot of games already this year. I’m already looking forward to that game.

Okay, I don’t get this. How is it that ROMANIA is already qualified for Euro ‘08, but either France or Italy runs the risk of not making it. There is some kind of imbalance in the universe.

It’s all about the group. I still don’t understand how France and Italy weren’t both considered 1-seeds and therefore kept apart … the mystery of UEFA continues.

Martha, another coaching victim: Marco Giampaolo has been fired by Cagliari, probably will be replaced by Nedo Sonetti. (source: http://www.stadionews.it/brevi.asp?ID=28423)

I have to admit, I’m as shocked as you are. Romania haven’t had a near perfect campaign since the 90s, but the day has finally come. My sweet Romania (Mutu, Lobont,Chivu + 8 Clowns) has become the envy of the top teams. Muahaha
Oh, we just lost to Bulgaria…this is awkward…
