Oh Dear God, Or: Someone Undid Zamparini’s Straitjacket
By: Martha | May 14th, 2007
You know how Palermo’s Maurizio Zamparini spent what seemed like months mulling over the inevitable departure of Francesco Guidolin before finally firing him a few weeks ago? Well, now that the team’s results without him have been crap — culminating with a totally humiliating loss to Ascoli yesterday — Zampa has thought better of his decision. I wish I was kidding, but I’m afraid I’m not — La Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting this morning that Guidolin is back, presumably to keep the team from sliding out of a UEFA Cup spot. Sigh. SIIIGGGH.
When the possibility of this move was first reported yesterday, it was immediately refuted by Zamparini (thanks to Lisa for digging up the latter link) on Stadio News, a Palermo-based sports website. Now, though, the story is back, both in La Gazzetta and on Stadio News — and it’s official.
Really, I think I’m out of words when it comes to Zampa’s crazy. My main reactions to this are two: 1)Guidloin is no longer a victim, he’s part of the madness — when he took this gig back, he agreed to take everything Zamparini puts him through from this point on; and 2)Deep depression at the realization that this is the way Palermo are fixing the problem of sucking. This. This is it. Because, you know, things were so great when Guidolin was there.
Did I mention “sigh?”

I’m not holding my breath on that UEFA Cup spot. I’m baffled by the workings of Zamparini’s mind. And Guidolin’s. And everyone else involved in this farce.
