Oh, Man. The Pope Ain’t Gonna Like This.
By: Martha | January 15th, 2008
Gather round, kids, it’s Clericus Cup time again!* You remember the Clericus Cup, don’t you? It’s the annual tournament of clerics, hosted by the Vatican and filled with dodgy football, shout-outs to the Lord, and much love for mankind in general.
Or, in the case of this year’s tournament, filled with bad behavior: In this week’s round of matches in Italy, there were three red cards handed out to the footballing priests and seminarians. Three! Not only that, but two of the three were as a result of verbal abuse, one coming after the end of a match, when a midfielder from Ecuador got into it with an opponent (!), and the other to a coach, who was sent off for yelling at the poor referee. (Oh, and then there was the straight red for a bad tackle, but these things happen, especially when you’re maybe not very good at football.)
I don’t know about you, but I’m shocked. Shocked, I tell you! Verbal abuse from seminarians? Next they’re going to be telling us that clerics are just like the rest of us, or some other nonsense. Needless to say, the cardees will all be doing penance. Lots and lots of penance.
*At this time, I cannot confirm the rumor that Cagliari are scouting the event.

Please, you know deep down, Benny loves fights to the death. Red cards are merely aggravations.

I think it’s important to understand how the tournament authorities defined “verbal abuse” here.
Perhaps the “F word” as we understand it, is entirely different for clerics. Perhaps this was just a case of an Augustinian calling a Benedictine a “F…ranciscan”. :)
