Oh My God — the Gadaffi Spawn is Back!
By: Martha | November 29th, 2006
Depending on how long you’ve been following Italian football (or what books you read), you may be unaware that (former?) part-Juventus owner and Libyan international Saadi Gadhafi (yes, his dad is who you think he is) actually played briefly in Serie A. Not, mind you, because anyone thinks he’s actually a good footballer, but rather because having the son of a dictator play for you is magic at the gate! (Or, alternately, the owner *cough*Gaucci*cough* is twisting the manager’s arm. Or something.) Despite the small stumbles of appendicitis and a three-month ban for a positive drugs test, he nevertheless managed to play once each for Perugia and Udinese. And now, after more than 12 Saadi-less months, the man is back in training with a Serie A club, this time with Sampdoria. AND, he’s going to play again — but at least it’s only going to be in a friendly.
Though Luciano Gaucci (you may know him and the guy who refused to let Jung Hwan-Ahn play for Perguia after his goal against Italy in 2002) isn’t involved this time, it just so happens that the president of Samp owns Erg, an oil company that has “strong relations” with Libya. You have to figure that Pappa Gadhafi gets a kick out of seeing his kid “playing” top level football, right? Perhaps such a big kick that he, you know, gives all sorts of price breaks to Erg? Hmmmm?

I am told the response on the Samp training ground when he lines up a shot is “Oh my God, it’s Gadaffi - duck!”
