Oh Sheva Rumors, How We’ve Missed You!

By: Martha | May 4th, 2007

In happier, nakeder days. It’s been many terrible, lonely months since we’ve heard a story about Andriy Shevchenko’s desperation to flee his alleged misery in London for the comforts of Milan. So long, in fact, that it was getting to the alarming point where we started to think he’d had the nerve to forget Italy (including his beloved Berlusconi and Kaka) and settle in at Chelsea for the long haul. Thankfully, however, the rumors returned in force this week to save us from that strange land of peace and quiet.

Things started on Tuesday, when Sheva was seen talking with the Milan contingent at Anfield during Chelsea’s Champions League match with Liverpool. Even if he was only saying something like “Hey, how’s the family? Yeah, I totally love it here, Jose Mourinho is my soulmate. Who would have guessed?”, it was inevitable the conversation would be portrayed as just another sign of the striker’s desire to return to Italy. Then came the rumor (which I can’t find right now, but I swear I read it) Sheva actually called Mrs. Berlusconi recently, detailing his misery in London and begging to play again in the San Siro. And, while it initially seems this would be an ineffective tack, you may recall this is the same woman who somehow convinced her husband to use the national press to apologize to her for dallying with other women, so underestimating her powers would be a huge mistake.

And, finally, it all came full circle today, with Milan supremo Silvio Berlusconi yet again encouraging the press to speculate on a Sheva return by telling them he knows the player wants to come back, and that “Certainly for him the doors are not just ajar, they’re wide open.” Got all that?

Clearly it matters not how many doors are open if Chelsea won’t let their Sheva go, but things are in such flux there right now that it’s even more foolish than usual to speculate on what might happen this summer. So, to sum up: Sheva loces his Milan but, as usual, nothing is happening. On the positive front, though, he’s officially not a snitch. Which is something.

Mrs. Berlusconi is certainly powerful, but so is Mrs. Shevchenko. We Milan faithful remember that he moved because his wife wanted their daughter to learn English and he agreed. To move back to Milan now would sort of contradict things. I also read a few weeks ago Barca were interested in Sheva, a move that would also contradict his reason for leaving. If he really wants his family all to be able to speak English he will stay in England and I cant see him being sold to another English club, so Chelski it is dear old friend.
