Oh, Those Brazilians

By: Martha | November 16th, 2007

Dork.Ok, ok, I’ll talk about it: Pato and Ronaldo each scored two goals in a Milan training match yesterday. ZOMG THEY’RE GOING TO WIN THE SCUDETTO! Ahem. Sorry. Nothing against the Brazilians in question but, as I said in the comments last night when Marco helpfully posted a link to the goals, it’s a training match, for heaven’s sake, against a few teammates and, given the absence of the entire team for internationals, a whole lot of youth players. The Italian media love these things, though — Adriano got five in one a month or so ago, and La Gazzetta instantly had him starting the next match (needless to say, he watched it from the stand); the same thing is happening here — it’s the second coming, times two. Still, though: Goals! Yay. Ok, moving on.

Speaking of Adriano, as we periodically do, he’s being linked with Arsenal again. Last time this happened it was over the summer, and Arsene Wenger, while confirming Inter’s approach, rather smugly told the press that he’d turned down the offer, and indicated no interest in the striker. This time, the proposed deal is reportedly a loan, in exchange for either Tomas Rosicky (the more often this comes up the more likely Inter’s desire for him is true — he’s been consistently connected with them in rumors since April) or, yet another Brazilian, Gilberto Silva. Additionally, a few days ago the father-agent of Nicklas Bendtner told the press that Inter had asked Arsenal for him on loan (Nicklas, not his dad), again in exchange for Adriano. Whew.

While the last one seems dubious at best (Surely even Moratti knows he doesn’t need another striker, even if he is 19 and awfully talented), the other two names seem like reasonable Inter targets. That said, Wenger doesn’t come across as much of a risk-taker on players over about 16, let alone those who are going through Major Life Crises, so Inter are probably going to get another mostly polite no, just like they did over the summer.

That Adriano to Arsenal thing is a complete and utter joke. Now, Arsenal have Van Persie coming back from injury after the international break and Adebayor’s Togo failed to qualify for the African Nations’ Cup. I don’t think it would help Adriano’s drinking/depression issues to go from being the 5th choice striker at Inter to being the 5th choice striker in North London (he’d maybe even be 6th behind Walcott).

Plus there is no chance that the Gunners will let Gilberto go on account of the African Nations’ Cup. Toure and Eboue will be gone and Gilberto will be a key man to fill in due to his versatility of playing a couple midfield positions and center back in a pinch.

Inter may want the Arsenal players mentioned, but I think Arsenal would want something other than Adriano in return. Even if they were in need of another striker, I can’t see Arsene Wenger wanting to import that kind of drama.

It’s pretty funny that Inter are apparently desperate for Rosicky, but just keep shoving a wildly out of form striker in Arsenal’s direction. Someone is a little unclear on the concept of negotiation.

Inter need to understand that they lost out big time not selling Adriano to CSKA London when stupid figures like 100 million Euros were being thrown around.

Now the best they can get is probably getting him off the pay roll by loaning him out (actually only partially getting him off it – cos I can’t think of anyone paying that much a week for a fat striker who can’t come to the match without a hangover).

It’s bad to see though, cos Adriano could’ve been a great. He probably still can, but I think definitely not at Inter.

Maybe he should go have a season in Brazil on loan.

It’s quite ironic, because two years ago, he was the hottest property in world football.

    Very sad to see.

He and Cassano should get together and console each other.

The thing that amused me most about that C4 article was Galli saying that Duckie ‘likes to bathe in sweat’. I’m telling you now that the mental image my brain attributes to that phrase is quite probably NOT the one Signor Galli had in mind *grin*

(Gila: But Pato! I’m TOO HOT!
Duckie: Shut up whining and sweat some more. There’s barely enough to cover my feet in there!)

Ahem. I can has bigger version of that picture?

Romanista, you’re so right — he’s right next to Cassano in my head, two guys who are still young enough to rediscover their magic, but are yet to show any signs it’s going to happen.

Hey, whatever happened to how Milan were saying that Ronaldo wasn’t fat anymore and he looked like a supermodel? Because, um, not so much:
