Oi, Sir Alex! What’s Up With Rossi?
By: Martha | July 9th, 2007
Though at first it looked as if Parma was going to be the only team sweating Manchester United for the services of young Giuseppe Rossi, demand for the lad’s services has skyrocketed over the past few days, and it looks as if, should Man U want to let him go, they’ll have their choice of large offers from Italy.
In addition to Parma, who have made it clear since late last season that they’d like to buy the little New Jersey-born Azzurrini, Milan have suddenly appeared out of nowhere to shake things up, and are expected to make a formal bid of their own later this week. Reports in Italy suggested that Parma’s bid was in the region of £7 million, and that Milan are set to offer £1-2 million more in the hopes of securing the striker’s services. And, if two big bids from Italy aren’t enough, it was suggested in the Portuguese press over the weekend that Benfica, too, may be eying Rossi, so Man U could have a delightful bidding war on their hands over the next few weeks.
Of course, at the moment, the only person really saying the striker is available is Parma president Tommaso Ghirardi; it’d be nice to actually hear it from, say, someone with some authority at Man U. Plus, so far Rossi himself has insisted he wants to return to England and make a place for himself with Man U — it’ll be interesting to see how his tune changes as the offers roll in.

It sure looks like they are going to sell him. I’m thinking the only way they wouldn’t is if the Tevez thing falls through. And really, if you are Rossi, would you really want to go back to Man U when you’d clearly be about the 4th or 5th option considering all that they did this summer?

Yeah, that’s how I see it, too — as long as the Tevez thing works out, Rossi is dispensable (and will probably bring in a nice little pile of cast, to boot) and, unless he’s got some sort of secret Man U compulsion, surely would love to move back to Italy for good.
(FWIW, I’ve seen him mentioned in a few places as Fiorentina’s speculative replacement for Bojinov. Plausible, or no?

I think Porto gets first refusal for the Anderson deal, of course they may not want to splash out that sort of cash. And Roma’s in on him too (but I don’t want him).

At this point I have no idea what Fiorentina is planning on doing. Very rarely does a day go by without them being linked to a new player. I think Rossi is an excellent prospect, and I’m not sure how he would fit in with the 3 known attacking players Fiorentina is going to field next year, Montolivo, Pazzini and Mutu. Could Rossi fit in as a winger or is he more of a withdrawn forward/attacking midfielder type?

I’ve never seen Rossi play out wide — with Parma, Newcastle, and the Azzurrini he’s always been a straight attacker, far as I know. And it seems like it’d be a terrible mistake for anyone try to shoehorn him into a system on the wing just to have him on the field — anyway, he’d just drift to the center and take 30 yard shots ….
