Palermo Boss: What Have You Done for Me Lately?
By: Martha | December 18th, 2006
Christ, talk about a hard gig: After his team’s dismantling by Roma, Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini decided that not only is he bummed out about the result, but also that the team is now “an embarrassment.” I’m sorry, what? The team that’s third in the table, just went out of Europe, and has been kicking a fair amount of ass with what compared to those of the top two teams is a tiny squad, an embarrassment?! Dude, talk to anyone below you in the table — I’m guessing most of them would be willing to trade a lot of what they have for your team of humiliation.
And it actually gets worse: The source of Zamparini’s shame is coach Francesco Guidolin, who apparently showed himself to be utterly useless by not playing David Di Michele until late in the game. For what it’s worth, I love Palermo and think it was a good decision — the way Palermo were playing, Di Michele’s ability to run at people with the ball wouldn’t have been utilized, since they were mostly playing the ball long. Once could certainly question the system as a whole, but at least from what’s in the press it doesn’t sounds like that’s what Zamparini was doing. I mean, seriously: Making management decisions from the luxury box? Who does this guy think he is, Silvio Berlusconi?
For what it’s worth, Guidolin — who has been through this before with Zamparini — basically said, “Eh. Whatever. The man likes to talk.”, in response. Which, when you think about it, is just another sign that he’s the right coach for the team.
