Palermo v Chievo: That’s it, I Quit

By: Martha | February 18th, 2007

I have no idea why he's so upset.Ok, not really. But if I could wrest myself out of their gasp, I would officially renounce my love for Palermo. Watching them has become total agony — there’s no spark in the side anymore, instead they grind out each game through a lot of whining and hard fouls. Which, in bottom sides, is actually something I greatly admire, because they’re doing what they need to do to grab points, fighting tooth and nail to survive. But Palermo aren’t a bottom side, they’re third! And even with Amauri hurt and a small squad, they really shouldn’t struggle to get a point off Chievo.

That said, I could handle the loss of form with more grace if the team were battling together, or at least showing a bit of passion. But they’re not, and it’s horribly depressing: It’s just 11 guys out there, wandering about and periodically trying to get to the ball to players in the same color shirt. ARG. Plus, after listening to Caracciolo and Di Michele bitch and moan about the club during the winter break, it’s hard not to see selfishness in their constant diving and whining. Di Michele was actually probably the most productive player on the pitch for Palermo today, but his bright moments were overshadowed by an attitude so crappy it made him hard to watch. All together now: Siiiiiiiiiigh.

Oh, and one another thing: As far as I can tell, Chievo and Palermo wear the same uniform, just in different colors. So why the hell do Chievo look like such crap? Do they pull their pants up too high, or something?

Palermo were very disappointing today. What happened to them? They were so much fun in the first half of the season, and now they’re so…not. It can’t all be down to Amauri being out. If they keep going this way, they won’t be third much longer.

i think the only saving grace was the defence, mainly zaccardo, biava and fontana. guana looked surprised everytime the ball managed to get his way. corini was i don’t know where.

i think UGH about sums it up

Siiiiiiiigh indeed. Even Zampa’s got the knife out, too. Sometimes it’s hard to be pink.

As for the Chievo strip, the reason they are teh suck is THE YELLOWNESS! *averts gaze*

Ruby, is it getting the knife out or just saying what everyone else is thinking? I love Palermo, but they were dismal yesterday. If they want that Champions League spot, they have to get it together. (Totally agree about THE YELLOW. That color does no one any favors.)

You’re probably right, Lisa — he’s just saying what we’re all thinking after the last few matches. That said, though, he’s been a negative Nellie all week, talking about how the team has no chance to make Europe next year, etc, etc. It can’t possibly help, can it? I mean, what’s his angle in talking crap about his own club?

For his part, Guidolin is busy blaming the fans. Quite a pair those two are …

I can’t find all the quotes so I could have dreamed them, but during the week he was imploring the fans to be supportive — according to the Gol TV announcers, he employed a the-team-is-like-a-biker-riding-up-a-steep-hill metaphor in an effort to get the fans to cheer despite the crap play. And then yesterday, after the game, he said “the fans are not helping us,” blaming them for booing the sensitive young team.

And yeah, there was a lot of silence during the game, and then a lot of booing afterward. But you know Guidolin would be booing, too, if he was paying to watch this nonsense.

to be fair, they hadn’t paid much for their seats. for anyone that bought a chievo ticket, automatically gets the chance to own a milano ticket for the upcoming match.

i believe zampa was using reverse psychology on the team. unfortunately, it didn’t work. he’s since stopped attacking the team and just accepted the suck.

however, totally attacked di michele who was too busy blaming the fans. zampa said that di michele should be busy playing instead. burn.

I don’t get what they expect the fans to do. If the team is playing poorly, it’s hard to get worked up. You can do it for a game or two, maybe, but after a while, resignation sets in. And it’s not like the fans can take the field and score the goals. So they’re just going to upset the fans, and worse, all the squabbling over who to blame doesn’t exactly help the team. Maybe the press silence will do them some good.
