Palermo v Siena: Finally!
By: Martha | May 20th, 2007
So, it turns out all Zamparini had to do to get his team to play again was to fire Guidolini and then rehire him three weeks later. Of course! Why didn’t we think of this before? The season could have been a lot less frustrating had he just done that in December, rather than waiting so damn long to pull the proverbial trigger. Thankfully, he did it just in time, because today’s three points wrapped up a UEFA Cup spot for next year and allowed Palermo fans to breathe freely for the first time since late 2006.
Today, finally, the real Palermo were, if not back, at least lurking in the area. There were attacks nearly as flowing as those last fall and, even when things got a little more chaotic in the second half (Read: Siena started to hurt everyone in sight.), the desire and belief were still there, which we haven’t seen in what seems like months. To make things even weirder, Andrea Caracciolo (Yes, him.) was rampant: Working his ass off, winning free kicks right and left, hardly whining at all, and scoring a fantastic goal to boot. AND, as a special bonus, Guidolin saw fit to actually start Corini, and the captain put a free kick off the inside of the post to open the scoring. Huzzah!
Also, for what it’s worth, the few times I’ve seen Siena this season, keeper Alex Manninger (Who I remember from his days in rainy London, back when he was pasty and always looked vaguely ill.) has been great, as he was again today. The poor guy really deserves better. Hey, I hear Juve might be needing a keeper soon …
