Peruzzi to the Rescue?
By: Martha | August 22nd, 2007
Lazio are having all sorts of trouble filling the goalkeeping gloves of the retired Angelo Peruzzi. They thought everything had been solved by the arrival of Juan Pablo Carrizo, but he’s suddenly run into passport problems and may not be available to the club until January, which leaves them with a rather substantial hole in their goal. And, since current first-choice Marco Ballotta is actually six years OLDER than Peruzzi (whose backup he was last season), a certain retiree is probably looking better and better to the Lazio brass.
Oddly, no one from the club seems to have approached Peruzzi, so yesterday he took the step of telling the press he’s ready if Lazio want him back. That, right there, is love. Despite apparently having had his desire to stay on as part of the coaching staff dismissed by the club, Peruzzi’s taking the very un-footballer like step of getting over it because he thinks he might be able to help the team he loves solve a situation that’s just sort of a crisis. He’s been training alone and would be match-fit fairly quickly should Lazio decide they want to bring him back, if only until Carrizo’s paperwork is sorted.
If none of Lazio’s other options work out — their latest rumored targets include Francesco Toldo, Carlo Cudicini, Emiliano Viviano and Vlada Avramov — and they don’t take him up on this, there’s something weird going on. (Well, either that or Peruzzi was just kidding. The hell?)
