Pompey Trying Again for Muntari
By: Martha | May 24th, 2007
Late last summer, Portsmouth were desperately to sign the fairly awesome Sulley Ali Muntari, but at the time Udine’s asking price of £11 million was deemed too rich for the English club’s blood. This summer, however, as previously rumored, they seem likely to finally get their man.
According to reports in both England and Italy, a deal is close — so close, in fact, that Udine have release Muntari to travel to Portsmouth to discuss personal terms. Still only 22, the Ghanaian is expected to fetch a Pompey-record £7 million, an amount significantly lower than some of the alleged offers flying around over the past 12 months (Milan, for example, were rumored to have offered £12 million last winter.) but an impressive fee nevertheless.
Muntari, meanwhile, is passing the time by telling everyone he’s desperate to play for Pompey — apparently they’ve become his reason de etra: “I’m just waiting for the day to join Portsmouth. I want to play here. I have been supporting the club for a year by watching their games on television. It’s been a fantastic season.” Take that, Udine — you’ve been his second-favorite all season. (Of course, last summer the man was equally desperate to join Man U, so just give it a few months and maybe he’ll be pining for your club, too!)
