Professore Lucarelli!
By: Martha | March 19th, 2007
I can’t decide if this is hilarious or awesome or both, but Cristiano Lucarelli has been invited to teach a class at the University of London at the end of April. (Ok, never mind — I’ve decided. It’s awesome.)
The invitation was extended by John Foot, the author of the brilliant, comprehensive Calcio: A History of Italian Football who, it turns out, is a professor of modern Italian history in addition to being a football fanatic and a great writer. From what I can tease out of the Google translation, Lucarelli is significant (or at least is being sold as such to Foot’s students) because he “represents the exception” to the norm in world football, where money is the driving force behind virtually all decisions, and loyalty is increasingly rare. And, since the man turned down literally millions to stay at Livorno, his boyhood club, it’s hard to say Foot’s opinions aren’t accurate.
Needless to say, Lucarelli is all fired up to take part in the class, where it appears he’ll take questions from Foot and his students. (One hopes that, for their sake, none of the kids ask the striker about his recent statements to the press about possibly leaving Livorno. That could throw a monkey wrench into the whole “Standing on principle thing.”) Any of you guys happen to attend the University of London? Clearly we’re going to need a report.

*pouts* I’m at the University of London, but Queen Mary, not UCL. The lecture isn’t listed on the public events page, so I don’t know if there’s any way for non-UCL students to attend. :(

Doh! So close! I don’t suppose they’d certify The Offside as press? You could go as our correspondent!
